Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Slow rendering on an orientation change when running app natively in iOS and Android

I have deployed my app natively in both iOS and Android using PhoneGap Build. When I run my app natively, the List Control orientation change takes a very long time before it renders into an alternate view. I have a list control with about 300 rows. It has a free-form portrait and a columnar landscape layout. When using a mobile browser, it takes about 3-4 seconds to render the alternate columnar view after changing the orientation from portrait to landscape. When run natively on an iPhone or Android phone, it takes about 15 seconds for the columnar view to render. Everything else in my app seems to work fine in native mode.

Does anyone have any ideas why the orientation change rendering would take so long?

    Thanks

300 records should be no problem. The fact that there is even a 15 second delay is a bit much. Is it a complex query that the list is based on? Is the db server on the LAN or local to the web server? How are you filtering the data? Database type?

I get the data via a web service. The columnar layout uses the same data as the free-form layout. The columnar layout renders the 300 records in about 3-4 seconds when running in a browser, but when running as a native app, it takes 15 seconds. Both layouts (free-form and columnar) and both platforms (web browser and native app shell) access the data in the same exact way.

Maybe data caching going on in the browser? I don't know. Change your List control to Data Pagination and see if that makes any difference.

Can you filter your data and get back a smaller sample to test with? 20, 50, 100, 200 records... see where the problem pops up.

        Code:
The web view used by PhoneGap is the same web view used by the native operating system. On iOS, this is the Objective-C UIWebView class; on Android, this is android.webkit.WebView. Since there are differences in the web view rendering engines between operating systems, make sure that you account for this in your UI implementation.
Given this, is the web view that Safari uses exactly the same as the native web view? If that were the case then shouldn't they perform the same? Doesn't help... just thinking out loud.

Re: Slow rendering on an orientation change when running app natively in iOS and Android

I'm not sure why I did not notice this until I created the PhoneGap app, but I am seeing the same behavior now when I launch the app from a web browser. It progressively gets slower each time I make an orientation change and it re-renders the list control. It seems like it adds about one second to the rendering time per landscape orientation change.

I created a test case using a very simple UX component which contains a single list control with 2 layouts (a free-form portrait and a columnar landscape). The data is coming straight from a static list and there are 219 rows. I have it configured to switch layouts when there is an orientation change. The response time to render the landscape layout is very slow when I change the orientation the very first time (approx. 4 seconds). It progressively gets slower each time I make an orientation change. After about 10 orientation changes, the landscape layout takes about 10 seconds to render.

I am using V12 build 1620. I will turn on the profiler and measure the Javascript execution times.

          Thanks

I haven't done a ton of testing but I may be finding the same results. I'm loading 240 images into a list. When first loaded it takes about 4 seconds for a full render on an orientation change. One Layout. After about 10 orientation changes I'm up to around 10 seconds. It doesn't take any longer after that. Now that you've got some static list data in a test case you can submit it to Alpha and get their opinion. I don't think it matters but I'm running in GardenWeb.

Thanks David. I already submitted it yesterday.

FYI - Selwyn said they were able to reproduce the problem and will be working on a solution soon.

                    Dave,

Not to hijack this thread... but what version of PhoneGap/Cordova are you using?

As far as the Cordova goes, I have only done some preliminary testing with the API and Garden Web. I was using version 2.9 and I also tried built-in. My PhoneGap apps are not using the Cordova API at this time.

Things in PhoneGap change really fast and change a lot. I can get Notifications working in 2.9.0 but not in 3.0.0 or 3.1.0. I've tried both Alpha functions and calling Notifications directly. Must be something in the config.xml file that is not set up properly.

                          In tomorrow's build:

UX Component - List Control Performance - The way in which events are bound to List controls elements has been improved. This will result in a improvement in performance when doing an orientation change on the device and switching to a different List layout based on the orientation.
