Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Unable to access my database through an outside computer via web

    Hello everyone,

Ive been using alpha5 for about two years now (but im not an expert) and I built a database using AlphaAnywhere Version 12 and launched the application server with my licenses, but im having trouble accessing my database through the internet on a remote computer. I can access it from a different computer on my server but can not via a computer outside of my server using a web browser. By the way, I'm using my computer attached to the server to run my database.

What am I doing wrong? Please let me know if you need more information about my issue, anything will help.

Did you mean you can access it from another computer on your local network? How are you accessing it (What do you type in your browser?)

Re: Unable to access my database through an outside computer via web

yeah, I wonder if your actually looking at pages served up from the alpha5 server on the internet vs just a local copy when your looking at it on your computer (or one in your network)
did you install it on an actual server or just your PC? with no port 80 issues? There is a difference and if you already know that then please accept my apologies. Just because you are running the server on your PC does not in any way mean your serving it up to the internet.
      Post the URL your using.
      good luck!

Re: Unable to access my database through an outside computer via web

Im running it on my pc using port 80, and yes only machines connected locally can access the pages through my network. Im simply typing in the IP Address of my pc in the browser.

How do I serve it up to the internet? I purchased an Alhpa Anywhere total training for the web v11 training video and followed the steps outlined within. Thats how i got to this point, but I'm having trouble progressing from here.

        Thank you for the feedback.

If the ip address starts with 10.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x then those are intrenal addresses that only work inside your router/firewall.

Re: Unable to access my database through an outside computer via web

I dont want to set you off on a wild goose chase but you can do it this way

            http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/connect...etwork-dyndns/

Or rent, a VPS install the application server, a website, and your files.
Most hosting providers of "regular" websites do not let you install software so you will not be able to install the application software on a server unless you have root access.
which for a first timer can be quite a hurdle.

Alpha 5 documentation on setting up a server is pretty thorough....

or if you just want to connect to your computer and work it as though your right there - use Team viewer - which is free and simple to use. Its your PC in a window, which could also let you work on your program as well as use it!

Actually there a lot of ways to do it.

More questions - Are you doing this from a home server? Do you have a firewall? Have you registered a domain name? What type of internet access do you have? (speed/Cable/T1) Perhaps you should consider going to IADN.com and hiring someone to point you in the right direction, or if you are in no rush, seek help here. Every question/answer will probably prompt new questions. You may want to do a little research yourself before proceeding.

Re: Unable to access my database through an outside computer via web

                hello

if you are using your server and typing in your internal ip address and able to see the pages via a browser ( if all these are true) and then if you are trying to access the same pages from another computer thru internet using a browser and not able to see the pages ...
have you forwarded the port( port 80, you are using to the ip address where the server is. for example forward the port to 192.168.0.22 something like that where the server is.)
if you do then you should be able to access the server from outside,
however some isp providers block that port for incoming requests. then you should go to the firewall and allow alpha five server to be permitted to access that port or use port 82 for alpha five.

Re: Unable to access my database through an outside computer via web

I set up the application server using my PC with an IP address that does start with 192.168.x.x. using port 80, Everyone within our local network can access this. Im trying to set up this "mock" database as a trial to see how it would all work, so that in the future we can launch our main databases to be accessible via the web. The server at work that we all connect to uses Windows server 2008.

We currently have a website that is hosted by Saratoga Hosting, my goal is to provide a link on that website that will point to a corresponding database.

Thank you for the Lifehacker link, I will definitely be playing with that today.

Be careful opening up your network to the outside world... Hosting the alpha app remotely might be your best bet.

I'm not familiar with port forwarding, is this done on the router or network server? Do I forward this to my local ip address on my machine where I'm running the application server.

Thanks for your help, sorry for sounding like a newb.

this is done in the router
say your server is located at 192.168.0.22 then forward port 80 to that address.( you can use any computer on that network, usually 192.168.0.1 will get to the router base)
login to the router and probably look for advanced tab then look for port forwarding.
once done go to google and check what is my ip then use that to look at your web pages.

It means you are hitting the Alpha server, but that page it not present. At this point, look at your server, find the document root (defaults to "c:\a5webroot") and see if your index_real.html page is in the document root, or perhaps in some subfolder, or missing completely.

You said this was a test so I understand that you are trying to hit a test ".html" page rather than a normal Alpha ".A5W" page.
