Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Mandatory Update of V12

Alpha Software has just released a major update to Alpha Anywhere, packed with new features and Application Server stability improvements. This update is a mandatory update because your existing Alpha Anywhere software will not function after October 31st.

You need to update BEFORE Friday to prevent disruption to your users. Please see the FAQ section below to understand more about why you need to update.
Now this could be a really bad joke, but is it true?

Yes, as disruptive as this is, it is true. See all posts in this thread: http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...sion-1749_4210

No need for fuss here. Yes, it's short notice and it's a surprise, but it is what it is, and it's also a one-off. The upgrade benefits are tremendous as well. I've upgraded 4 servers so far, no problems yet and I look forward to using some of the new features. Alpha's provided explanation, help, special emailing etc. I for one am glad they caught this when they did. Can you imagine if they had not?

I am with Steve on this,

Obviously it is a screw up on Alpha's part, They could have explined it a little better agreed, but they have found the issue and have communicated as fast as they could. It is less than ideal but it has happed, what else do you want them do to do?

So now we upgrade and get on with it.
Have you not find something in your code and gone "Opps!" Maybe you are a better programmer than me.

          Re: Mandatory Update of V12.

I just finished the upgrade on three severs. What I found is that I had to recompile the components. Before I realized I needed to do this I started having an issue with reports in a UX that were based on array with a SQL backend. Basically, getting error msgs that it could not pass empty array statements. Once I did the mass recompile now it is all working.

I think the issue here is that no upgrade goes unpunished and we should have been given more notice to test, figure out the bugs and workarounds before being forced to upgrade servers. With the slow downloads, NET updates and checking this is an unexpected several hours of work.

Yes I have gone "oops!" Bruce, usually during testing though. On the other hand, I won't ever put myself in the position of having someone else run my customers: too many moving parts and all that.
Of course things go wrong. It's how well they are put right which is the point.
The short notice is unforgivable, and in a serious production environment there would have been a workaround on the licensing server application to overcome the problem, even if the licenses were left open ended for a month.

              Re: Mandatory Update of V12

So per the topic title I have updated our server (and seen minimal problems on the desktop side of things), however I can't say the same for mobile...

Issue I am having is when I try to open a component by clicking on an item in a list control (in one case the component is opened right away, in another case an action sheet is opened and once one of the buttons is pressed within the action sheet the component is opened) the components aren't being populated based on a value that was in the list..? Anyone else having this issue? Also, in the first case I open a component with multiple panel cards and it seems the panel navigator is messed up because when I try to swipe it only switches halfway to the next panel? I have buttons that are meant to activate each panel as well but these now do nothing?

I've tried rebuilding the action JavaScript to no avail.

I've tried to refresh the data binding schemas of the components that are being opened to no avail.

Someone mentioned "re-compiling" but I'm not sure what they meant by this (republish the whole project or is this another tool all together)?

Hoping there is a global fix as I have quite a few mobile components and would hate to have to rebuild ever single one. Thanks for any help!

                Re: Mandatory Update of V12

Re-compiling means open Alpha developer to your project and set focus to "Web Projects Control Panel" now from main menu "Edit" => "Bulk Operation..." => "Recalculate UX Components..."
                Hope this helps.

                  Re: Mandatory Update of V12

Totally unacceptable in the real world. I previously worked in a financial institution and there is absolutely no way you could get a major change like this through in 3 days. In some especially sensitive areas you probably wouldn't even get authority to download the updated version into a test environment let alone live.

Decided me once & for all that Alpha is a dead end for any serious development intended for sale/customer facing.

Am downloading MS Visual Studio with LightSwitch as I type after which I will be spending several weeks converting all Alpha apps to a more reliable platform. So long Alpha & thanks for all the headaches.

ps. No need to keep looking at the broken working preview problem on Win8.1 IE11 on my behalf as I'll be long gone before it affects any of my customers.

                    Hi Josh,

I see Gary gave instructions on the recompile. I also made a back-up of my web root, then deleted all the files and did a complete republish, then restarted the WAS and Server. This seems to have cleared up some strange issues with components not rendering fully and issue with the connection string. What was strange is that I only had this problem on one of three installations.

                    Hope your up and running.

                      Re: Mandatory Update of V12

I have worked for a lot of large Fortune 500 companies and I can say we also had our fair share of fire drills due to emergency patches. This was with SAP, Oracle, etc. Sometimes it was for a security hole, sometimes we had to upgrade because a key interface would stop working, etc. Normally we had very long involved testing procedures for any patch, but we had procedures in place for emergency changes. It would be run up the flagpole to a VP to get approval, we would have a team do as much testing as possible and the patch would be applied in a "highly monitored" environment.

Obviously this is not a perfect situation with Alpha and they have pledged not to do it again. I was on 10.5 for years with no similar issue. I understand people not wanting to use Alpha but I disagree that in a situation such as this organizations do not have procedures in place to deal with it. I can think of two occasions where a newly discovered Microsoft security hole required the almost immediate patch of thousands of workstations. Now that was fun haha.

Thanks for the info Garry. After applying the patches, 7 out of 10 computers worked fine. For the life of me couldn't determine what was different about the others. After recalculating and publishing, everyone is back up and running.

I have non-upgraded sites - and they are working fine, i'll get to them once I test it the impact. I'll just hold of restarting the server just in case..

I did the mandatory update using a5v12_full_patch.exe on October 10 and still I am gettting the message saying "You are using the license for Beta testers. The beta period has expired". Allthough I have the subscription license. What Am I to do now? Or who do I contact?
