Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Mandatory update - download servers are way too slow!!

The mandatory upgrade requirement is bad enough but add to it a download server that is maxing out at 10KB/s from multiple ISP including Comcast, Rackspace, LiquidWeb. I find that the update is 3 hours for developer and similar for the server. Come on guys you can do much better. I downloaded 1.9GB file this morning from Acronis on my Comcast connection and it completed in 7min 15 sec. How can Alpha expect everyone to upgrade their A5 v12 in such a short time window and then test for bugs and download a new patch at 10KB/s?? FWIW I tried both standard and alternate download sites as provided by A5 with similar results.

    Any suggestions?

    Brad

Not sure if Alpha would frown upon it but if someone shared it via Google Drive people could get it a lot faster if Alpha's servers are overwhelmed.

We are working to get alternate servers set up as quickly as possible. Because of the unfortunate crunch of getting everyone updated as quickly as possible, the existing download servers are simply overwhelmed. This includes a commercial software download service we use in order to try to prevent just this type of situation. As soon as the alternate servers have the downloads in place, we will post links to them here and on the main download page.

              Lenny:

Thanks - the Amazon AWS servers are working - I just downloaded from Virginia server at 4.0 MB/sec! Entire download for both server and developer in about a minute.

Can you put the full versions on AWS as only the patches are there at this time?

I'm working on those now Brad. The patches themselves are the bulk of the traffic so those were a priority, but the full downloads should not be far behind.

Thanks - fantastic response to that issue. Well done on the additional servers - nice to have a local european source. Was getting depressed with the 12KB/s.
Any chance you could maintain these alternates into the future?

Richard, I'd imagine there was quite a speed boost for you with the new European server being right in your back yard.

We will be maintaining enhanced downloads using Amazon going forward. We are actually looking at taking it a step further and using their CDN which is even more widely distributed.

Shucks, it looks like the Oregon download site was just removed from your update links. It only took 1 second for me to download from that site! It took Norton File Insight maybe 6 seconds to determine it doesn't like the reputation of the file.

Oregon is still there. Under the simplified "CloudFront" heading, there are actually over 40 servers behind the links and you will automatically be routed to the best one.

                            Lenny,

I notice that the page has been simplified again to cloudfront (dlcf) with automatic selection ? For me it remains super slow like it used to be, a few days ago downloading from Virginia was the fastest of all (not very fast but compared to all others the fastest by far even outperforming the European servers)
