Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Problems applying patches

I have installed the updates, a5v12_full_patch.exe and a5v12_AppServer_patch.exe. But I still show that I have build 1749_4210.

Also, I can't verify that the Application Server has been updated. No systray icon, not running as a service, and no start menu item from which to launch it.

    Anyone else having these problems?

No problems here...is the process running? Is the server folder under Program files ??

Re: Mandatory update - download servers are way too slow!!

The only process showing in task manager is alpha5.exe*32. I am just running the App Server on the local machine, and it is working. I have a webroot folder. I'm not sure what folder or file I should be looking for.

Re: Mandatory update - download servers are way too slow!!

alpha5.exe is the process for the development system
        A5ApplicationServer.exe is the application server.

In your C:\Program Files or c:\Program Files (x86) folder you should see a folder called A5V12 for the development system and A5V12ApplicationServer folder on the system where you have installed the app server.

if alpha5.exe process is running and you don't have the development system open, that is why the patch did not take. Exit A5 and make sure the process is not running before running the patch.

Re: Mandatory update - download servers are way too slow!!

Bill, thanks for your help. Here is where I am at so far......

Yesterday I downloaded both patches, closed A5 and ran both patches. Both appeared to run just fine and gave completion messages. Neither patch asked for a reboot, but I did reboot at that time anyway. At this point A5 still showed build 1749_4210.

A few minutes ago I downloaded both patches again, and closed A5. I ran a5v12_full_patch.exe, and this time it asked for a reboot. I rebooted and now A5 shows the new version, build 1755_4215!

Then I ran a5v12_AppServer_patch.exe. It appeared to run ok and gave a completion message.

I found A5ApplicationServer.exe in my c:\Program Files\A5V12. When I try to run it I get an error: The program can't start because SPELL32.DLL is missing.... Try reinstalling...

So it appears i am missing a .dll file. I will see if I can download it somewhere.

I assume the Application Server is running since my application runs on my development machine. But it seems strange to me.

            Re: Problems applying patches

The application server and development system should not be in the same program files folder. If you have the application server installed, you should be able to uninstall it. I would uninstall the app server and reinstall using the full download. Do you want the development and appserver on the same system?

              Re: Problems applying patches

Right now I am in development only, running A5 on one machine, and publishing to the local web root on the same machine. The application server and development system are not in the same folder. I have not had any problem with it so far, but I am still new with A5. Should I have it set up differently?

                Re: Problems applying patches

I thought you said your a5applicationserver.exe was in the a5v12 folder?

Normally you would want the appserver installed on a system, other than your own desktop system ( A host or a server dedicated to the appserver).

There is an application server built into the development system for testing purposes. This does not need patches applied to it, since it is part of the development system. The app server has a separate license and activation. This is where you would publish your app form others to use.

                  Re: Problems applying patches

Well that explains why the application still runs on my development machine. I do have A5ApplicationServer.exe in my c:\Program Files\A5V12, but I am not running it. I won't worry about it until I need to host the application.

                  Thanks again for your help.

                      Re: Problems applying patches

Yesterday I did the mandatory 1755_4215 update and after it completing one of my major components stopped reading the session variable I setup. Also I started getting a java script error. After hours of searching I located 5 controls that seemed to cause the error and rebuilt them. Everything seems to be working now but I was wondering if anyone else experienced any issues like I had?
