Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Export to Word or Text issues

Have 8 reports in layout style and have them set to HTML. The export menu above appears with PDF, EXCEL, WORD, TEXT, Print HTML.
Pdf pops up a save to window as Excel does. Print brings up a print menu, but Word and Text don't do anything.

I've had 10 people try it from different places up the east coast and same thing.

No one else having this issue?
    Not sure whats wrong.

    firebug shows for excel (Works)

Re: Export to Word or Text issues

    Jim,

I can confirm that Word is not working for me as well. Doesn't matter which browser. Although Print HTML seems okay.
This looks like a bug. Bug report sent.

this has been fixed. fix is available in the current pre-release build.
however, if you don't want to install a pre-release build, you can work around it in the current build. by changing your connection string.

the bug is cause by high order characters in the connection string.

if you edit the connection string and replace the high order characters (which are in the password section of the connection string) and replace with regular characters, it will work.

I am having this same issue, only a couple years later.

Is it possibly the same problem?

Re: Export to Word or Text issues

how are you trying to export to word or text?

if you base your export on a Layout Table report, then Alpha has direct support built in - the export will be very quick and the word representation of the report will be very faithful to the original report.

if you base your export on a Freeform report, then Alpha will use the Amyuni printer driver to produce the .rtf or .txt file and the results will likely be disappointing (and relatively slow) because of limitations of the Amyuni printer driver (which we have no control over). the Amyuni printer driver converts the .pdf report to .rtf or .txt and it does not do a great job at this.

because the Amyuni printer driver is not very good at converting .pdf to .rtf, the Layout Table report is by far the preferred approach to authoring reports that need to be exported to either text or word.

Re: Export to Word or Text issues

I built my report as a quick report. it is not using any freeform styles or anything. This particular report is merely a list of names.

It exports to Excel and PDF perfectly, but does nothing when I try to export to Word. The cursor turns into a whirly gig for a moment and then turns back to a regular cursor.

Firebug does not report an error. (I tested in Firefox with and without firebug running and tested in IE.)

I could email you a video demonstration if you would like to see it.

i suggest you build a test case using Northwind and then send the test case to us.

Re: Export to Word or Text issues

The export to word works in working preview inside my app. It fails once it goes online.

I built one in Northwind and it also works in Live preview. I have another app where it works perfectly fine exporting to Word all day long both in preview and live.

It seems to be an app specific thing. (Which is exactly what is described earlier in this thread.)

I also tested the text export - it fails in the same way that export to Word fails.

Short of sending you the entire app, I'm not sure what else to do. A video would show you it happening - but it's happening exactly as I'm describing it.

The thing is - online the report is run from action buttons, and it is in a grid which is a sub-grid of a header grid. I will try removing some of the complexity to see if I can get it to a place where it all works, then backtrack from there.

I'll report my findings here in a bit.

Re: Export to Word or Text issues

For an example of it not working, try this link:

                    https://easytrack.us/wtsql/participants_list_test.a5w

The button that puts up the simple report is in the toolbar.

It prints in HTML mode and has buttons to xport at the top. Excel and PDF work fine, Word and Text do not.

There is NOTHING to this page. It is a simple grid, the button is an action button. The page was created from the grid using "save page" so there is no extraneous code in there.

Re: Export to Word or Text issues

The export from HTML to word, excel, etc is affected by the download options in project properties. If you specify, for instance, that you can only download xls files then the excel export will work, but not the word export.

to have everything work as expected, either do not restrict the download files, or make sure you include xls, rtf and txt files in the types of files that can be downloaded. (And make sure you don't exclude those files too!)

This is found under Project Properties/File Download - Allowed Filenames and Disallowed filenames.

Note: Putting *.Doc* in there doesn't help - the Word docs are downloaded as RTF files ...
