I want to filter the list control on a value called from another component. The list control is connected to a MySQL view that links 5 tables. If I pass the value in an argument to the list control and filter the list control on that argument, then the list control must first download the entire content of the view before it is filtered by alpha. If I based the list control on a stored procedure, that procedure is executed on the server and only the matching records are uploaded to the list thereby increasing the speed to the search. At least that's how I think it works.

So, tell me why you would base a search on a SP?

I don't think this is the way it works. Using a View, which has a base # of 100,000 records, and the List control includes a filter in it's SQL statement... then 100,000 rows are not downloaded to the List and then filtered. You'd blow up the browser or the device you're on. View or SQL Statement or SP all return only filtered rows from SQL. You may get better performance out of a View or a SP but I'll bet it's negligable unless either the View or the SP is very, very complex. And even then, depending on the complexity, one or the other would be used. I believe that a view with 5 tables isn't much for SQL to handle.

Your way works great with one parameter but mine bombs on three parameters. I have tried quotes and parentheses but no luck. How would you do multiple parameters? :pram1 :pram2 :pram3 doesn't work.

This is the SQL Server format for a List Control SP...

exec getCusts :argCity, :argState

Where the args are defined in the UX and the order matches the SQL Server parameter order.

I am not sure if this is all that relevant but I thought it might be so here goes...you can easily call a UX from a grid with a button, and link it via an argument. This seems to me to be the simplest solution - at least for me. I am not an xbasic programmer and my code is at best cut copy paste and "modify"

Why not create the UX, with maybe a list control as desired and call it via a button click? I would also add that the list control could easily be filtered by the search part.
