Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Changing button label based on SQL record field

    I have a Point of Sale app and I'm making buttons for quick access to certain products. The button has a Lookup and Fill In Fields based on a record in the database. How would I go about dynamically assigning the 'ItemName' to that specific button label? The database has a field 'QuickButton' and a numeric value specifying which button it's assigned to.

    Re: Changing button label based on SQL record field

    Is the QuickButton field value available in your UX... Grid... you don't say what you're working with.

    That button, when rendered, has a Document Element ID... something like DLG1.V.R1.BUTTON_1

    If you have the value you want to change the label to you can do something like this...

    For a UX - $('{Component.name}.V.R1.BUTTON_1').innerHTML = "My New Button Label";

      I suppose that would help. :) Working with a UX.

      How would that change the label based on a field in the database?

        Re: Changing button label based on SQL record field

        If the field in your database... as part of the record, is included in your UX, then you can get that new label value and set the new label for the button.

        Your database has a 'QuickButton' field... AND a numeric value? So... two fields? Or one. Is QuickButton the numeric value?

        It's not clear where ItemName is coming from. Is it part of your UX record? Is it a part of the Lookup and Fill-in? I think the end result is... if ItemName can end up on your UX, it can be hidden, and then used to re-label a button.

        I think a screenshot of your UX would help.

        Have a look...

          Yes, perfect. 2 parts to this next question.

          1. I understand how to populate a dialog with data from a table, but how would you populate just this field from a table. it's not the primary table bound to the UX. it's one of the secondary ones.

          2. I was able to make it work with the button like your video. Didn't have the populate from the database code yet (see above question) so I just entered Default Text, ran the component and it did not change the button label. I would assume that the automatic script you gave fires before that default text is rendered?

          So back to the populating the field. I have a field in the UX called QuickButton1 that has the numeric 1 as the default value. I want to populate the 'QuickButtonText' character field with the database field 'item_name' from an Inventory table that's bound to this UX based on the numeric 1 in a field in the database called QuickButton.

          I tried doing a javascript Lookup and Fill in Action script in the Client-Side events, but don't really know where to put it.

          The next button will be 2, then 3 and so on.

          And thank you for the video. That was just awesome of you to do that!

            Got it figured out. Since it wasn't populating from a table, the afterPopulateFromTable wouldn't work. So I put your code in the onRenderComplete and then the Lookup and Fill in in the onInitializeComplete section and all works well!

            Yay! If you have any other ideas, let me know. Or a better way.

            Thanks again!!!!

              Re: Changing button label based on SQL record field

              If each "quick button" is associated to one record in the database perhaps through a query such as "SELECT TOP 10 FROM Products ORDER BY MostPopular" then setup a grid and place the product name on the grid as a "Hidden" control type with column set to Hide. And then Add a button and set the button label to the product name field surrounded by curly braces. Embed this grid on your main component.

                  Re: Changing button label based on SQL record field

                  Once it went live, the commands were firing out of order. Fixed it using A5.executeThisThenThat()

                  function fillinfields() {

                  {dialog.object}.runAction('QuickButton');

                  {dialog.object}.runAction('QuickButton2');

                  }

                  function labelbutton() {

                  var newButtonLabel = {dialog.Object}.getValue('qb1_name');
                  $('{dialog.ComponentName}.V.R1.QUICKBUTTON_01').innerHTML = newButtonLabel;

                  var newButtonLabel = {dialog.Object}.getValue('qb2_name');
                  $('{dialog.ComponentName}.V.R1.QUICKBUTTON_02').innerHTML = newButtonLabel;

                  }

                  A5.executeThisThenThat(fillinfields,labelbutton);
                  And put this in the onInitializeComplete. Works like a charm.

                    Yeah... I'll always be amazing by the "anything goes" attitude that javascript has. Thank goodness Alpha has provided a method to "bring order" (that's funny) to things. Thanks for the update.

                    Could you put up a screenshot of what the rendered page looks like?
