Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Passing dates from UX to an embedded grid through session variables fail

    Hi
In my UX i have 2 date fields ( named UXFrom and UXTo ) and an embedded grid. In the embedded grid, i have 2 date arguments in the SQL, that take their values from session.FromDate and session.ToDate. I set the arguments so if they don't find the variables they will prompt for the values.

In the UX, i set up the embedded grid's property in the "override settings" i can set session variables, as follows:
    Code:
    FromDate = {javascript}function() { return {dialog.object}.getValue('UXFROM'); } ()
    ToDate = {javascript}function() { return {dialog.object}.getValue('UXTO'); } ()
When i fill the dates in the UX and click to show the embedded grid, it always prompts for the arguments , they get not passed correctly for some reason.

    Am i missing something obvious?

    Thanks
    Jaime

Re: Passing dates from UX to an embedded grid through session variables fail

When you define the properties of the button that opens the embedded grid the "Open Grid Genie" window lets you specify "Link", "Filter" and "Order" to override the Grid's own definition. When you build the Filter or Link in the Genie it has a button, "Insert field from current component" that you can use to pass the date values from the UX into the grid. No need to use "Set Session Variable" in the example you've provided, unless there is actually more you are trying to accomplish.

Hi Rich. Thanks for jumping in
The problem is the those date fields, as i said, are "arguments in the sql", not actual fields in the grid...

          Jaime,

I can get my UX and Grid to work as you've outlined. But, before I write it up... how is your Grid displayed... what is the "Show mode"... "When button is clicked"?

And... do you need to refresh that grid? Do you want to be able to change the dates (after the initial grid display) and re-display the grid?

Re: Passing dates from UX to an embedded grid through session variables fail

Hi David, thanks for jumping in :-)
In Show Mode i have "when button is clicked" indeed.
Yes, the idea is to have the user select dates, then click on the button to refresh the grid with the summary data. Then later, what i try to accomplish is when moving in that summary grid, this will refresh an additional grid with the records that belong to the summary line.
The scenario is quite basic, i explained it in this post http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...l=1#post661897

I left the "Search part" route in favor of a dialog, and also do not think i can use the row expander for my purpose, although it's quite similar to what i try to do here between the ux and the embedded grid...

Re: Passing dates from UX to an embedded grid through session variables fail

Is there any reason why you're rather use sql arguments rather than "filter" the embedded grid on the dates?

Displaying the grid once, the first time, is fine... but changing the dates and getting the grid to refresh is a challenge.

The only way I can see of doing this would be to put a call into the date fields to close the grid. You'd have to use the "Can hide window" option.

If you run the grid... then close it... then change the dates and open it again... the correct records display.

Have a look at this, Jaime. Hope it helps.

Re: Passing dates from UX to an embedded grid through session variables fail

                  Very nice David, thanks!
Is there any reason why you're rather use sql arguments rather than "filter" the embedded grid on the dates?
Yes, the reason is *i have no other choice*. Here is what i am trying to achieve. This is something pretty commun in all my old VFP applications...

The main goal is to give the users an Activity Summary Grouped by Customers, for a defined date range.
Then, in the resulting summary (let's call it SummaryGrid), i give the option when clicking on a row, to show in another (let's call it drilled down) grid, the records that built that summary line. Clicking on a ID field in that resulting 'drilled down' grid will popup the Reservation form for instance, if that's a Reservations system.

So, the sql for the SummaryGrid would be something like:

                  Code:
select Orders.CustomerID, Customers.Name as CustomerName, count(Orders.OrderID) as ResCount, sum(Orders.Amount) as TotalAmount
                  from Orders join Customers on Orders.CustomerID=Customers.CustomerID ;
where Orders.ResDate between :startDate and :endDate
As you can see, in the resulting recordset there is no date field i can "filter" into...

Assuming now i am browsing that SummaryGrid, i would like in the 'onMove' in the grid ( is there an event like that? ) to refresh the 'drilled down' grid, which sql would be something similar to:
                  Code:
                  select Orders.OrderID, Orders.ResDate, Orders.CustomerID, ...more Orders fields, ... Orders.Amount from Orders
where Orders.CustomerID = {SummaryGrid--->CustomerID} and Orders.ResDate between :startDate and :endDate
In the latter grid, Orders.OrderID would be the link to popup the UX for the orders row entering.

As you can see, the row expander mechanism would be great for this sort of scenario, but after playing with it for a while i couldn't get it done...

Re: Passing dates from UX to an embedded grid through session variables fail

So... once you've got your Customer summary grid displayed (based on the UX Dates)... are you then using the Row Expander to get the Order Summary Grid displayed?

Re: Passing dates from UX to an embedded grid through session variables fail

Yes, that's what i wanted to accomplish in the first place. After failing to use this method, i went the "UX with embedded grid" route, in which i wanted to embed 2 grids side by side, one for the summary grid and the other for the 'drilled down' grid.

You can still use the Row Expander from your Summary Grid if you want to. I'm not sure if it's any better, compact, prettier... but just another option.
