Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Offline mode mobile support: Soon to be released?!?!?

I've heard (read somewhere on one of Alpha's sites) that in the "near future" there is going to be native code support (of some sorts) for an "offline application mode" added to v.12? (for mobile apps/tablets etc.) ~ To me this sounds as if we're going to get some sort of "emulator" that downloads & "runs natively" on portable devices. (which provides aa functionality on the device itself, while it's "offline")

If true, this sounds very encouraging!

It's all about the "framework." (I suppose an "a5-induced" hard drive crash is now in order?)

Great, but how is the mobile device even able to log on to the web site if they do not have internet connection? How would the mobile device have the data on it in the first place? I'm I missing something?

Reed, I am far from knowledgeable and only speculating about Alpha's use here but most mobile devices and browsers have local storage these days in the form of indexeddb and/or websql (you can google either). So if a user loads a website with internet access, the page can create a (small) local storage database and insert or update data. Then that data would be accessible when the user went offline. You would only use this for parts of your site--you wouldn't be able to replicate your entire database on the user's device but the point is as shown in the videos--someone's entering and editing some basic data while offline and when they get back to internet access that data can be reconciled with the full database. I'm quite eager to see how far Alpha's going to go with this, because the example is a great one but is only utilizing one component against one database table--I don't know how much that could be expanded in Alpha's offering.

Thanks Chris, if that is all it did then it would not work for us.

Is this now real think? I was able to get the Phonegap on iPhone [using Alpha/PhoneGap Build (APGB) that has been pre-released] and the first UX component seems like it is completely within the iPhone app - and even fires up when the alpha application server is down!!!

The Alpha/PhoneGap Build application lives, in full, in the mobile device now... but if you need data you'll still be making ajax callbacks to the server to get that data. If you don't need to execute XBasic, or (kinda the same thing) get data then a connection to your server doesn't matter.

However, this is completely different than disconnected, off-line storage of data. EDIT: Which is not out yet.

Only the initial UX lives on the mobile device. All child and grandchild UX components are loaded from the server via Ajax callbacks. Also be aware that server-side events for the initial UX are executed at build time when you save your PhoneGap settings. So if you are reading server-side data in the onDialogInitialize event, you will not be getting real-time data. You can move any data access code from the onDialogInitialize event to a new Xbasic function and perform an Ajax callback in the client-side onRenderComplete event.

That's excellent info Dave and David, exciting days ahead...

I'm really looking forward to learning more about Cordova/Phonegap builds with Alpha, it's one of the reasons I jumped on board with committing to A5v12 as a development platform.

I will follow in the path of you trailblazers.

                    Thanks for sharing!
