Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Publish files EVERY time?

For some reason, Alpha wants to publish these files EVERY single time I click the publish button. I understand some of them. I know the __ files are internal alpha files, but the png's and css? I'm not sure why those are being published every single time. I know it's not _that_ big of a deal, but it's over a meg each time I click publish and it takes a good 25-30 seconds. Does this happen with others?

    Re: Publish files EVERY time?

    Hi Sparticuz,

When I publish my files, I always select the following options:
    1. Selected files, and from here I select only the files that has been modified
    2. Uncheck "Publish Support Files", these are those files you don't want to publish all the time like CSS, etc.

Of course other options may apply based on your needs like the "Workspace Library" for reports, etc.

Also you may want to use optimized publishing: that is blazing fast!

        Re: Publish files EVERY time?

In most cases, you have 2 options on what to publish.
        • Publish Support Files - Selecting this will publish any CSS files and Images used by any pages or components selected to be published. If this is not checked, CSS files and images will not be published unless they are specifically selected for publish.
        • Publish Selected Only - When checked, this is a much more restrictive publish. When a page is published in a normal publish, any component on the page is also automatically published. Some components (such as tabbedUI) may have linked components. In a normal publish, all of these linked components are automatically published when the parent component is published.
          • Just the page is published when "Publish Selected Only" is checked.
          • Only the selected component is published when "Publish Selected Only" is checked.

Publish Selected Only also does not publish any support files and also does not publish some required system files such as pages like __a5RunGrid.a5w that are used for Ajax callbacks.

Care should be taken when selecting these options as they may not publish all required files to make everything run as expected.

          Re: Publish files EVERY time?

Most of the time I just publish one file at a time by clicking "Publish" in main toolbar, right after saving the component. I never had to work this way before. Also, please see the attached screen picture because there is a clear discrepancy between the use of radio buttons and checkboxes between the "Publish Web Project" window and the "Web Project Profiles" window.

          Frank,
What / where is "optimized publishing" ? I don't see that on the two attached images.

The hidden gem in Alpha (one of them): hidden_gem.png

If you elect to publish all files, that means ALL files, so the options to publish support files and publish selected are not shown as they will be selected anyway

                Jerry,

I think it would be less confusing if disabled options were ghosted rather than hidden. I've published a million times and I still get confused by it.

                Thanks
