Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Spin List Get Display Value

    I have a text box that I want to show the display value in a spin list. The spin list is set based on data series and the display value is one field (Car Brand) and the stored value is another field (idCarBrand). How do I get the displayed value from the spin list so the text box can display it?

    You can do this with a bit of javascript by iterating over the Spin control array that Alpha builds.

    I wanted to use indexOf for this but I'm not quite sure how to use it when dealing with an Object.

    Anyway... this is fast and works nicely. Have a look.

      Thank you very much... this is exactly what I need.
      Selwyn also sent me a video using the index method, the one you're mentioning you couldn't worked out.
      Here is the url for his video: http://screencast.com/t/iKJpBtdo3KL (He is also explaining another doubt I had)

      Thank you!

        I tried your method but I'm getting an error, please see attachment. I don't don't know if it has to be that I'm using data series.

          So... using Selwyn's excellent code... and Selwyn's reminder about a control's "Initialized" property... here's how I would use the OnSelect event of a SpinList control...

          Code:
          if (this.initialized){
          	var ctrlSpin = {dialog.Object}.getControl('spin1');
          	var spinValue = ctrlSpin.value;
          	var spinData = ctrlSpin._data;
          	var indx = {dialog.object}._findArrayProp(spinData,"value",spinValue);
          	var spinHTML = spinData[indx].html;

          	{dialog.Object}.setValue('spinStore',this.value);
          	{dialog.Object}.setValue('spinDisplay',spinHTML);
          }

              Re: Spin List Get Display Value

              Using a spin control in a UX based on a data series, with a displayed value, and a stored value. Would like to use the displayed value in a server side event. Trying to add the value to an automated email. The stored value is available in the action Scripting builder as {company_ID}, however the displayed value companyname is not.

              So my thinking is to create another control on the dialog to capture this value. So once the spinlist is set by the user this extra control, company is populated with the companyname (the displayed value), hence now being available in the builder as a place holder {company}.

              Is this a good approach, or is there a simpler way to accomplish this? Can I do this as a calculated field, or should it be done in a validation property of the spin control? Or should this be done as an additional server side event using e.data? Thinking this would be done in a variation of Dave/Elliot's code in this post in a control property?

                Re: Spin List Get Display Value

                You'd use the same technique that Selwyn detailed for finding the Display value of a Dropdown control... but it's a bit simpler with a SpinList control. I'm running this in the onSelect event of a SpinList control.

                Get the value of your selection. The onSelect event gives you 'this' and this._data gives you an data array of objects. Each object in the this._data array has a .value and .html property. Use the value of the control from the .getValue statement to find the index, based on value, in the array. Then grabs that array's html property.

                Code:
                	var sCountry = {dialog.Object}.getValue('spinCountry');
                	var indx = {dialog.object}._findArrayProp(this._data,'value',sCountry);
                	var display= this._data[indx].html;
                	alert("value: " + sCountry + ' -- display: ' + display);

                  Re: Spin List Get Display Value

                  Dave,
                  Couldn't get your second solution to work. No pop up dialog box, and an error in the Chrome debugger: Uncaught Reference Error sData is not defined. However I used the solution you provided for Elliot that worked for me.

                  if (this.initialized){
                  var ctrlSpin = {dialog.Object}.getControl('spin1');
                  var spinValue = ctrlSpin.value;
                  var spinData = ctrlSpin._data;
                  var indx = {dialog.object}._findArrayProp(spinData,"value",spinValue);
                  var spinHTML = spinData[indx].html;

                  {dialog.Object}.setValue('spinStore',this.value);
                  {dialog.Object}.setValue('spinDisplay',spinHTML);
                  }
                  Created 2 additional controls spinStore and spinDisplay that populate when the onSelect of spin1 is fired. These now show up as a {placeholder} in the action scripting builder in the server side events, and can be used in the email script as {spinStore} and {spinDisplay}.
                  Thanks again for your help!

                    Sorry... I thought I'd updated that code... but it didn't take. It's updated now.
