Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: How to Geocode a Record Using a Detail View with a Grid

    The only downside is all the time I spent on the detail views but I will chalk that up to the learning curve:)
    not necessary, you can create dialog component from the detail section so all your efforts won't go to dust.

    at the same time I also want to point out each has its merits. just like anything one trick pony won't succeed.

      Re: How to Geocode a Record Using a Detail View with a Grid

      I have more questions now...

      I will try to keep it simple though.
      First up
      I just stuck that code into the server-side events
      modified it to reference my fields and it did not work
      so I looked closer at what you said:

      you said to "call this user defined function" in both of those server side events.

      So I created a user-defined function in the code editor.
      Then in the server-side events I inserted the user-defined function

      still no happiness.

      I have also looked at the wiki under geocode
      and honestly this code looks right so I can't figure it out.

      Lastly you said to:
      put a debug(1) statement in your code & add code for the resultset to check for errors

      Unfortunately I can add
      debug(1)
      but I do not know how to do the error checking

      You guys have been great to share and work with me on this!
      Thanks!~

      I understand why some guys who may know how to do this shy away from even making a code post!

        Unfortunately I can add
        debug(1)
        but I do not know how to do the error checking
        while you are in debugger if you step thru and if there is an error the debugger will tell you and also you can inspect all the variables to see what values contained in them.
        if all is satisfactory to you then you can comment out debug(1) and run one more time again on working preview. this time debugger will not pop up but your dialog or grid wherever you are using the debugger will run and you can see if this is what you wanted and then proceed.

          "...so all your efforts won't go to dust." I like that:)

          I'm going to check into that now too. I didn't know you could base a dialog on a detail view.

          I may also do it all using UX component and replace the grid with list and detail view with a dialog.

          Thanks

            I didn't know you could base a dialog on a detail view.
            select the component with a detail view, right click on that component while you are in the web control panel. then select create dialog from this component. your dialog will be created with all the bells and whistles you had in the detail view.
            then you will need to adjust the submit reset button actions.

              Re: How to Geocode a Record Using a Detail View with a Grid

              Hi Frank,

              For those of us still stuck in DBF land, I created this script based on your own.......BUT, it doesn't seem to want to work...

              Code:
              function GeoCode(e as P)

              if at("ADDRESS",e.dirtyfields)<>0 .or. at("ZIPCODE",e.dirtyfields)<>0 .or.  at("CITY",e.dirtyfields)<>0
              	'Geocode the record

              	dim address as C
              	dim gc as P

              	address = e.datasubmitted.address + "," + e.datasubmitted.zipcode + "," + e.datasubmitted.city

              	gc = geocode_address(address, "Google")
              	debug(1)
              	if gc.error_code = 0

              		dim flag as L
              		'dim sqlCommand as C
              		'dim cn as sql::connection
              		'dim args as sql::arguments
              		dim jac as c
              		jac=e.datasubmitted.conid
              		'flag = cn.Open("::Name::nexcoadmin")

              		'GeogCreateLocation is portable SQL
              		'cn.portableSQLEnabled = .t.

              		'sqlcommand = "Update cpl set lat = :gclat, lon = :gclon, location = GeogCreateLocation(:gclon,:gclat) where id = :custid"

              		t=table.open("consumers")
              		query.filter="conid='" + jac + "'"
              		qry=t.query_create()
              		t.change_begin()
              		t.lat=gc.lat
              		t.long=gc.long
              		t.change_end()
              		'args.add("conid",e.datasubmitted.conid)
              		'args.add("lat",gc.lat)
              		'args.add("long",gc.lon)
              		'flag = cn.execute(sqlCommand,args)

              		cn.Close()

              	end if

              end if

              end function
              Any suggestions?

              Thanks as always.

                Charles,

                As long as you are referring to my connection string it will not work...

                  Re: How to Geocode a Record Using a Detail View with a Grid

                  OK, I figured it out after dreaming about it all night!

                  I left in the code of Frank's that I had to comment out.

                  Thanks to Frank though, because I had given up hope of ever getting it done!

                  Code:
                  function AfterUpdateRecord as v (e as p)

                  'function GeoCode(e as P)

                  if at("ADDRESS",e.dirtyfields)<>0 .or. at("ZIPCODE",e.dirtyfields)<>0 .or.  at("CITY",e.dirtyfields)<>0
                  	'Geocode the record

                  	dim address as C
                  	dim gc as P

                  	address = e.datasubmitted.address + "," + e.datasubmitted.zipcode + "," + e.datasubmitted.city

                  	gc = geocode_address(address, "Google")

                  	if gc.error_code = 0
