Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Application Server - Session Variables

    Hello all,

I have asked this question once before but never got it solved.

I have VPS with Alpha Anywhere installed and SQL express. I have created a web site and can connect to it on the internet while it is running through the Developer Web server, everything seems to work fine no issues.

But when I install the standalone "Application Server" and connect to web site via the internet, I can still access the site but my Session variables that are created via a "Login-Processing page" are empty.

I know that if using the Alpha Dba it has something to do with making sure you have the alias correct. But do you have to do the same with SQL??

I used the Training videos, and as suggested in the videos to create a page after login "Login_procesing" for the Session variable to be set, and this page then re-directs the user to the Main Menu page where the Variables are used to filter Grids etc...

So I can log into my site, I get redirected to the Mani Menu (so the login_processing page must be hit otherwise I wouldn't get redirected to the main_menu) but session variables have not been created, or have no value??

    Any Suggestions

I have attached my Processing page... Hope someone can find my error?loginprocessing.zip

Go to security configuration and uncheck Ignore return to page after login. Republish any page. Test.

Re: Application Server - Session Variables

Either the processing page is not being hit, or it is errors out. I think it errors out, these lines are not going to work:

        Dim Session.Dateholder as D
        Dim Session.LastDateholder as D

because session vars are all CHARACTER as of V11. You can easily see those lines error out when running the A5W page directly.

And filterFac = "FacilityID = '"+ Session.Facility+"'" because you set session.facility to numeric 0 above.

Easy to test, just run your loginprocessing.a5w page alone in the browser and tweak until it works.

My point about the "uncheck Ignore return to page after login" is because that controls whether the browser comes back to an original restricted page after login. I thought that might be your problem, but appears not.

Re: Application Server - Session Variables

          Hello Steve,

I'm pretty sure the processing page must be getting hit, because it redirects the user to the Main menu page, This is the last bit of code on the "Login_Processing" Page.

I also don't think the page errors because it works as it should when I use the "Developer - Web Server". It is only when I use the Application server that it has problems, e.g. when using the Application server it stills redirects user to the Main Menu, but the variables aren't given any value???

Hoping someone can find a reason why??

Re: Application Server - Session Variables

Assumption and Hope are not good debugging tools. Also, do not compare standalone server to your localhost experience, you will draw false conclusions.

In your first post you said "but session variables have not been created, or have no value"; which one is it? Are they being created?

Also, your processing page DOES error out when I test it, starting with "Dim Session.Dateholder as D".

You dim session.Facility as numeric, but then use it as a character later on in as a filter like this filterFac = "FacilityID = 'value'".

So there are lots of potential errors with your page. The fact that it redirects does not mean your page is error free.

You need to isolate the problem. We'd have to see more than this one page to understand the problem from our vantage point.

              Thanks Steve,

I will do some further work, I start by commenting out the variables and see if that makes difference.

Sorry for my lack of debugging knowledge.

I will so some searching on how to debug and trap errors, as my knowledge on how to do this is nil.

Thanks for helping, I'm sure it something that I have forgotten???

I guess that what make it so much fun, and challenging...

              Cheers.
