Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

UX Loads too slowly

    Re: UX Loads too slowly

I tried all of the suggestions. Loaded the UX three times and recorded the amount of time firebug said it took to load (in seconds).

    My UX in it's original state: 17s 21s 22s

    W/O background image: 19s 19s 18s

    W/ ~1/2 of the controls deleted: 13s 12s 14s

    With 'Compute data binding at
    design time' checked: 18s 20s 19s

Couldn't active "compute panel layout HTML at design time" ...gave me an error and made Alpha crash. Maybe because I don't use panels?

So what I get from this is that the shear number of controls in this UX is what is slowing things down. Is that correct?... this is very distressing to me.

Nope. Disagree. You have a problem that still needs to be identified and solved, and can be identified and solved.

I'm currently working on a UX that right now has 84 controls plus two embedded UXs and a fair amount of code.

It makes its initial load in about 6 seconds.

I see ... I'll continue to play with and hope I can find the problem.

        Thank you.

          Re: UX Loads too slowly

Is is the Absoute Container? Steve... are your controls in an absolute container?

Mike... if you continue the process of deleting controls... what do you get if you have 10 controls in your "AC"? You gained 4-6 seconds @ 50 controls.

What happens if you delete the AC completely. Time it. Then add 100 controls with no AC. Time it.

Can you post a shot of your background image? I've a thought for a workaround but it really depends on the image you're working with.

I tried removing the absolute container all together but leaving the controls in the UX and it didn't make a difference. Still took around 17 seconds to load.

I do have a list control in the UX. Removing it shaves 3-4 seconds off the loading time but I need the list control.

                Re: UX Loads too slowly

Mike, I have a UX with 112 controls that is using 2 absolute position objects in it. It loads in less than 2 seconds. I think Steve is leading you in the right direction. You have a problem that needs to and can be resolved. As Steve was suggesting, apply the rule of halves and begin to eliminate controls by halves and see where your problem is. I too work in the medical field and have written a complete EMR that we use in our clinics. I understand the need to keep your image on one screen and I am confident you can get this to load much faster and still keep the intended result. If you can not find your solution by breaking it in half then begin building a new component buy copying half the controls into it and testing from there. One more thought is to load the list and delay the render of the absolute controls until an item is selected from the list.

                  Re: UX Loads too slowly

A list control that takes 3-4 seconds is probably loading all data from a table. That can be a lot of data to transmit back to the browser and then the JavaScript engine in the browser must populate the list from the JSON data. Since it normally isn't possible for a user to see all rows, try loading fewer rows, such as just enough to fill the initial view by selecting Paginate data. Then you can use FetchMore or AutoFetchMore to get more rows as the user scrolls.

For example, a list control was built on test table with over 2 million rows but the initial view returned just 10 rows. The UX took less than 1 second to load and show data. It was set to AutoFetchMore, and fetching 10 more rows took .5 seconds or less, making scrolling relatively seamless.

If the list was set to return 10,000 rows, the UX took over 10 seconds to send the data to the browser and the Firefox JavaScript engine timed out trying to fill the rows after another 10 seconds.

Adding security tor fields will also slow loading as the the UX must be recalculated for each user to remove the fields not allowed. A UX without security on specific controls will load faster.

The advice from Max is good advice. Halving techniques should quickly isolate the controls or controls that cause the slowdown.

I'm having a similar issue with a 133 controls ux, i am watching the NET tab in firebug, but besides calculating the time it doesn't help much, i.e i see it's just spends all the time in the _a5rundialog.a5w command, how can i know what is keeping the rendering so busy?
