Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How do i refer to my ux window's title in javascript?

    Hi
    In javascript validations, I need to check for the 5 leftmost characters in my UX's (it's in a popup window) title. How do i do that?
    Thanks!

    I am not sure I understand what you mean.

    Again you are looking for an element and instead of setting it's value you are using Javascript to get the 5 left characters.

    Can you send me a screen shot.

    Do you mean Window Title?

    You can use Javascript substring

    var str = "Hello world!";
    var res = str.substring(1,4);

    First you need to get the element id of what you call UX Title and then use substring; Javascript counts from zero in this situation.

      Thanks Michael
      I do know how to use the substr in javascript.
      What I need is how do I refer to the window title? When I call my ux from the grid, I set it's window title to something specific, I need to catch that value from within the ux

        Re: How do i refer to my ux window's title in javascript?

        This code sets the title

        if(!currWindow) {
        currWindow = GRID1_GridObj.createWindow(windowName,'modal-resizable',
        {
        body: {
        content: {
        type: 'blank',
        elementId: '~'
        }
        },
        height: '',
        width: '',
        title: {
        html: 'XYZ_123', My Title to be easy to search for.
        location: 'top',
        direction: 'ltr',
        show: true
        },

        I then thought this would get what you want

        var title = document.getElementsByTagName('title')[0].innerHTML;
        $('frameTitle').innerHTML = title;

        Again I used a span to print what I had found in "title"

        Unfortunately nothing was returned. I was expecting XYZ_123

        The title is there to be seen unfortunalely I don't understand the elementId: '~'

        Good luck

          Re: How do i refer to my ux window's title in javascript?

          Is that the code that gets generated when running the action "open an ux to add/edit current record in grid"? Cause that's what I used to open the ux. When running that action, in the properties for the ux popup window, I can set the title. Now I would like from inside the ux to check that title for some value ...

            When you run the component you can view source by right clicking.

            If you use a title that is not common control F (crtl) and find it.

              You have to get a pointer to the window title using getElementById & then check the innerhtml. If you used auto to name the window then you'll have to find out via Firebug otherwise it will be yourwindowname.TITLE.TEXT

                Ok what i did is enter <span id=myWindow>My title here</span> as window title for the ux.
                Inside the ux, i can then getElementById(myWindow) and retrieve the innerhtml from there. It works great!

                Many thanks guys

                  You should not have to enter another span just a name is OK , Alpha adds the span for you: check your window with Firebug and you'll see it!

                    Re: How do i refer to my ux window's title in javascript?

                    It may be a little bit safer to add your own span id if you're going after the title in this manner. If you had two buttons on your grid and they each opened a UX in a window then each window would get an Alpha span id of A5dlg0.TITLE.TEXT. Note the number at the end of A5dlg. It's sequential and get assigned first come first served.

                    So... you've got two buttons opening UX1 and UX2.

                    Today you open UX1 and it gets assigned A5dlg0.TITLE.TEXT. You note that and go after it's innerHTML as $('A5dlg0.TITLE.TEXT').innerHTML
                    Then you open UX2 and it get assigned A5dlg1.TITLE.TEXT. You don't need it's title and so all it good.

                    Tomorrow you open UX2 first and it gets assigned A5dlg0.TITLE.TEXT.
                    Then you open UX1 and it gets assigned A5dlg1.TITLE.TEXT. Your code is going after $('A5dlg0.TITLE.TEXT').innerHTML and fails.

                    Just for fun, another way is to grab a bunch of objects like this...

                    Code:
                    var pObj = {dialog.object}.getTopParentObject(); // gets the grid object
                    var wObj = pObj.getWindow('MYUXWINDOW'); // the NAME of your UX... not the Title. This gets the UX object... the child of the grid.
                    var windowTitle = wObj.getWindowId('title');
                    var currTitle = $(windowTitle+'.TEXT').innerHTML;
                    var partTitle = currTitle.substring(0,5);
