Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Printing report to a printer on the WAS server, Can it be done?

    Hi All,

Has anyone managed to print from a web/mobile client to a printer that is attached to the WAS server?
I would have thought this would be easy and in some business solutions a common requirement
The scenario we have is we have a Alpha Anywhere App running on Nexus 10 tablets. The stores person is checking in pallets of goods at the loading bay (So far so good works great)

But here is our problem... he/she needs to print off labels for the Pallets... Hmm Android Tablet ... not really printer friendly
1, Tried Google Cloud Print.... if you can get it to work(which we haven't on the tablet) it is really slow and requires a Cloud Print enabled printer or a PC running Chrome etc etc really not a good solution for a Business/Warehouse environment.

2, (I have played with Epson Print App (Printer I had, yes there is HP etc but they are all sort of the same) This is no good as we would have to save the report as a pdf then go to the print app and find the pdf, then print it... Not really an efficient solution and again, not a good solution for a Business/Warehouse environment.

3, So I thought we should be able to print the Report to a printer on the server using
    Code:
    last_printer = :report.printer_override("EPSON WorkForce 630 Series")
    	:report.print("[email protected]")
    	:report.printer_override(last_printer)
This Thead (Post#20) leads you to believe it should work
    http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...t=report.print

But I keep getting errors like this
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...eportPrint.PNG

"OK...." I say I will try something else...
Error executing Ajax callback function 'PrintOnServer' Error reported was:
    Amyuni Low Level Print:
    Layout name: [email protected]
    Layout type: report

SQLReporting 6 - DataSource record for Layout not found.

    Report Dictionary: LittleShop.alb
    Dictionary found: False
    Report name: TestReport
    Type: REP
I have tried Saving as PDF on the server.. Like this (3 different versions (copied from MB postings) but all produce the same error)
    Code:
    dim fn as C
    	fn = report.saveas("TestReport@c:\A5WebRoot\LittleShop\LittleShop.alb", "rtf", "", "", "C:\reports\test.rtf",.T.)
    	fn = Report.SaveAs("TestReport","PDF","","","C:\Reports\\Test.pdf",.T.)
    	report.saveas("TestReport","PDF","","",".Test.pdf")
As If I could get the PDF on the server I could print them using the 3rd party tool Watch Directory www.watchdirectory.net/‎

This is far from ideal (I would rather print to the Printer on the WAS server) but It could work... If only I could get the
    Code:
    Report.SaveAs
    or the
    Code:
    a5w_report_saveAs
    to work

I have re-published teh alb files I have deleted the whole folder re-published the whole project... tried the various code n a didderent development PC and a different project.... same errors what does
SQLReporting 6 - DataSource record for Layout not found
What does that mean? I am at a total loss. It is 4am in the morning and I have been a this for a stupid amount of time...
    Help! what am I missing???

Oh and by the way, the report prints perfectly to the browser..... so the report is fine well the browser thinks so.

Other info; I am running Windows 7 and AA Build 1856 4237
These errors happen in Working Preview, Live Preview and when published to a WAS running on a Windows 2003 server

    Help! what am I missing???
If anyone can help the Blind here I would be very greatfull

Command line printing like http://www.cups.org/documentation.php/options.html should do the job because you can shell out to cmd from within xbasic. Works probably best with a true adobe postscript printer if you plan to send PDF's. PS emulation based printers often don't work that well. Xerox has genuine Postscript in their printers most of the time.
I've seen some postscript printers that would even allow to just ftp the pdf to it, don't recall make however & it's been some time I was working in that playing field.

I use EpsonConnect to print from mobiles - you just email the pdf to [email protected] and voila...it works really great. The problem is that i just checked at Epson, and the workforce 630 does not support epsonconnect...

        Hi Jaime,
Thanks for that. That may still work as the workforce 630 is just the printer I had in my office here that I was using last night. The client will have very different printers so the long term solution may well be HP print or another printer service.

I think the easiest method is to:

          - print the report to a folder
          - use a "folder watch" utility like this to auto-print the document http://funasset.com/products/silentp...s_features.asp

Developer Nick Wieland has been using this process at a client for years.
