Windows 8.1 and the PDF reader

How can I make it so that the PDF opens up in the same window instead of this garbage way windows 8.1 does it now. I don't want people to loose their page.

Yes, I still use my antiquated method of opening an A5W page in a new window, passing the name of the PDF document to that window. The target A5W page has the code below. Note that I am sending the PDF to the "data" folder described in the path alias. You might have to tweak that if you are sending the pdf file somewhere else. There is also a redirect page named no_pdf.a5w that just says "sorry, could not open the file.".

Roelof, on most PCs and in most browsers there are options about how to display PDFs. Some PCs may come with Adobe Reader or NitroPDF or something else, and most browsers will have default way to display PDFs--with the in-browser PDF viewer, or in-browser Adobe Reader, or open-in-a-separate-window. Reality is you can advise your users what the ideal settings for your app is but you can't control it from the app itself.

If you use my method it will always open in a new window, because the new window opens before the PDF is called up. True though that each browser has a different method to open/display the PDF.

I see now Steve--thanks. For our app in which we deal with lots of documents, even with company-only users it's been a nightmare fighting automatic browser updates switching these kinds of settings.

Roelof, had I read your question more thoroughly, I would have better understood the question. Steve's got the answer you're looking for; a slight variation would be to open it into an iframe in the original page.

Thanks for pointing that out, I am working on being better explaining things. :)

I don't use reports anymore because of that issue, I use grids as much as possible.
