Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Connection String

    is there a way to read a field from a table and assign the value to a named connection string? Like ::name::myconnection = "someOtherConnection". I want to run the same program in a real and test environment and they connect to a different database.

    Re: Connection String

    I'm thinking I wasn't clear with my explanation. I can use the genie to create a connection string. What I need to do is create one in code.

    I tried:
    ::name::myconnection = "someConnection"

    and it doesn't work.

    Any idea how to do this?

        I saw that earlier and since the use of __protected__ variables is no longer necessary I wasn't sure it would work. Thanks for the help Carol, I'll give it a shot later and I'll see if the __protected part is necessary.

          carol , have you tried it and its working ?
          actually let me me add something to your question as well ...
          can we give the option for the user to create textbox and drop down menu from admin page lets say ...
          and create the table in database that meets the user selection when he click on submit button ?

          this is going to be interested if the answer is yes !!
          really interesting ...

          Good luck ^_^

            I have been using the dynamic connection feature for my multiple customers to log in and connect to their own back end databases since V10 and it is still working fine on V12 with the __protected session variable. I don't know if the protected is necessay but it could be that Alpha looks for that structure for the variable... Answer unknown.

            ahmed, I 'm not sure I completely understand your question, but on every lookup or dropdown, I tell those to use my dynamic connection string

              its like I want to give the user the ability to create his own page .. he would add textbox and drop menus to a page .. and give
              the page a name and when he click on Create button .. the page will be generated and going to be published as well ... as well .. it will generate the table in database to meets what he added in that page ...
              something like dynamic ....

                Re: Connection String

                It works fine with some quirky behavior. During design time you set the connection string to your dynamic connection and it works as expected. However, at runtime, the dynamic connection holds no value until you set the session.__protected__ variable to a value. Also I had no luck reading the connection string from a table and assigning it from the result set. Not a problem really since I can indicate which connection string to use in the table and the assign it explicitly with a case statement.

                Problem solved for now. Thanks Carol.

                  Carol, do you know if these dynamic connections work in a UX because my UX's are failing to connect?

                    Re: Connection String

                    It does work. However, you need to go to "Web Project Profiles\Named AlphaDAO connection strings" click on that button and update the connection string there.

                      Yeah but if you look at Post #2 what the original question was... How do you build and set Connection strings from code?

                      I for one need the ability to do this fro an upcoming project where Mu application will need to flip between some 70 odd databases on the flys as Users log-in. I can't be defining each separate connection string that is not sustainable for maintaining the application as Client database come and go over time.

                      Love to hear from someone that has managed to set and change connection strings that are derived from a table.

                      Thanks

                        Re: Connection String

                        I've been using this for a couple of years now so there may be a better way to do this now:

                        session.__protected__ABCConnection = "{A5API='SQLServer',A5DBVersion=2008,Server='sqlserver',A5ANSINullPadWarn=Default,UserName= " + "Tenant" + vCompany + "," + "Password= " + a5_decrypt_string(vPw, "Blowfish") + ", " + "Database='ABC_Data'}"
                        flag = a5SQLConnectionOpen(cn,"::Name::DynamicConnection_ABCConnection", session)

                          Re: Connection String

                          All done Thanks. What a tedious chore that was.

                          The only problem left, and I think it's a bug, is that even though I changed the help info in Project Properties, It still refers to the old connection string for help. The result is that all my help messages are blank.

                            Re: Connection String

                            The method Carol referenced about multiple tenants works well. I'm not sure why it failed when I read the connection string from a table. My guess is that you could set up an array of connection strings and then set the session.__protected__ variable to an element of the array when you want to change databases.
