Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    2 pointer slider

I have watched the videos on 2 point sliders and am trying to implement in a Ux control.

I am trying to set the min and max of the slider programatically but am not sure which event is the Alpha equivalent to Ms Access form's OnOpen. I am not at my computer right now, but I believe there is an event called OnInitialize. Is this the way to go?

I would like to place min and max values of a bound table. In Access, the easiest (though not the best) way would be DMin and DMax functions.

Finally, once the user selects a range, I need to apply the results as a filter. Both the filter syntax (I know I need to use ..) and the event (OnChange) are proving to be a challenge.

Any and all tips are MUCH APPRECIATED.

I wonder if there is a "cleaner" way to do this... but here's a kind of brute force way.

You're right in thinking that the Server-side event onDialogInitialize is needed in order to get the table values needed.

Then... in the same vein... onRenderComplete is used to complete the set up of the slider and filter the List Control.

Here's a video and the control...

I forgot to include the slider control onChange event stuff in the video, so have a look in there. There's code there that grabs the min and max values from the slider but I don't use them for anything.

Thanks so much, David. Very informative, clear, and helpful information. As I continue to learn Alpha and apply it to the system I am converting, I am wanting/needing to understand each step completely. Near the end of the onDialogInitialize XBasic code, you have the command:
      e.javascript = "{dialog.Object}.__priceMinMax=" + priceMinMax + ";"

You state that you are sending the character variable out into the "dialog object name space", and then you go on to use in the Client-Side JS. I have successfully created my character variable, but am wondering if/where I need to define this "name space". As I test my onRenderComplete code, it is apparent that I am missing something in this critical bridge between server and client side.

Global variables? Session variables? Where/how do I go about defining.

{dialog.Object} is an object you can "piggy back" onto. You can create "variables" that get attached to this "name space". onDialogInitialize gets the main info you need... the min and max values. Now you need a way to pass this XBasic Server-side data information over to the Client side to use in a javascript function.

e.javascript lets you assign javascript statements to it... and that javascript gets executed when onDialogInitialize is finished.

We set a client-side "variable" with the statement {dialog.object}.__priceMinMax where __priceMinMax is that "variable name" and this "variable" is attached to the {dialog.Object} name space.

We assign this variable setting statement to e.javascript and it gets executed when onDialogInitialize is done.

Then... anywhere in the client-side... we can say... x = {dialog.Object}.__priceMinMax; and get the value assigned to __priceMinMax. It's kinda like a global client-side variable.

In onRenderComplete you can test for the variable you created in onDialogInitialize... is it there?

          Re: 2 pointer slider

I have attached my two sets of code. I really like the concept of "piggy-backing". However, my syntax must be off, because my "variable" comes through as undefined in the OnRender.

Any clues would be, as always, much appreciated.

Thanks for helping me through this. I know once I get these basic concepts figured out, I will be able to recycle them like crazy!

            Re: 2 pointer slider

Attached is my UX component. I am still struggling with a few issues:

            1. I am not able to "see" my variable from OnRenderComplete (Client-Side) that should have been created once onDialogInitialize (Server-Side) completed.
            2. My arguments do not seem to be working. In the end, I will be wanting to build a filter statement in the OnClick for my Search button. I'm thinking several JS conditions that build a parameters variable that is then assigned using {dialog.object}._filterList()? It would be great to see a sample that would include a date range filter in all cases along with a "Vendor" filter if something is filled in.

I know what I want, and how I would do it in Access, and am slowly learning JavaScript!

Try this one... dates are usually horrible to work with. Maybe it's just me... but here's what I had to do to get this to work.
