Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Append Operation Problem - HELP NEEDED!

This problem has been occurring off and on for the past year, but now it seems to happen each time I use the append function.

I built a small DBF table. I want to append some records from a duplicate, but different table. I use the append operation, and all the records are appended without error.

I make some data changes to the duplicate table, run the append operation again, and I get the following message:

    ScreenShot073.jpg

Then the only way to "release it," is to shut down the Alpha Five program and restart it. This is problematic because I have lots of web application users logged in at any one time, and while they all may not be "active," I still don't like shutting it down unless I absolutely have to. Meanwhile, this now happens every time I run the append operation.

Any thoughts as to how I can get the target table to not show that it is "in use," especially when I know it's not?

Rich it sounds like two things - the guys with the violations will be really happy it crashed - and the thread here by stan is a good idea - check the xbasic and set it SRW, you can also run the web stuff on a different port e.g. start Alpha on port 82 and 84 so you have added WAS's running and have the officers use those ports for web access - that way if you have to close alpha to fix you issue they will keep running.

Nice to hear from you mate, Pete

Re: Append Operation Problem - HELP NEEDED!

      Hi Pete

My server runs SSL so I think I have to keep it on port 443. I'm using Alpha's built-in Append Operation, so I'm not writing any code of my own, and Stan's recommendations are somewhat foreign to me since I'm not well versed in writing Xbasic code.

I think I may submit this as a bug, because I don't think it should be locking up each time I use it.

Solved. (Although I'm not sure why)

I sent it in as a bug report, and Selwyn ran some tests and had no problems appending the two tables. In the meantime, I had performed some Windows Server 2008 updates, and now the append operation runs perfect every time.

Not sure what those Microsoft updates had to do with Alpha Five, but I won't look a gift horse in the mouth.

I've seen that error various times. Rebooting always solves it. When your windows updates were done, I bet the computer rebooted.

Re: Append Operation Problem - HELP NEEDED!

              Thanks Pete and Gary.

The updates did require a reboot, but it had been rebooted multiple times prior to the updates, because the only way I could "unlock" the master table was to reboot the server.

So I'm assuming that in this particular case, it needed both the Windows updates --and-- the reboot to solve the problem.

As always, thanks for the suggestions.
