Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Need help wth JSON List SQL Update

I have a list control and I am using the javascript code to movie the list items up or down to create a new order for the list. I want to save that new order back to the table. The table has an order number field and when the user moves a list up or down that gets set to the logical row number. All of this works fine and through the videos I can create the JSON object of the new list in the correct order. Where I am stumped is how to use this JSON statement to update the MySql database.

I see lot's of functions to create JSON objects from result sets but I don't see functions or SQL statements to read either in bulk of by row the JSON statement into the SQL UPDATE function.

Normally, with an array or result set I would create a loop and read each row and execute an update statement.

if someone can point me in the right direction it would be appreciated

    Thanks,
    tom

Did you see this one? It's documented. I haven't used it recently, but I believe I did use it to process a JSON object in XBasic. a5_JSON_PopulateArray()

The XBasic JSON_Parse() function will parse your JSON into a pointer array... so that's works too... probably the best bet.

Thanks David, that's what I needed. I looked at it before but I didn't quite get how to use it the first time.

After I get the parsed json (using json_parse() ), how do I go about actually updating my table? Do I have to loop through the data to enter it into the tables using a specified update statement? Or is there an easier way to trigger this to happen? Thanks!

          Hi Josh,

I'm not sure what you are trying to do.....can you explain more. I was using the JSON_Parse() to populate a control in the dialog. If you want to populate a table you may need something else. Where is the data coming from? A SQL query?

I was looking to accomplish this, once I have the data from my multiple list controls I want an easy way to update my data in the tables so that the user doesn't have to worry about hitting save. Then when they come back to these lists they will be populated with the correct data in the correct rows. So I was curious if there was an easy way to do the mySQL update (as in just send the parsed json as a batch to the server) or even a way to run through each row and update them. Right now I am pulling out the elements of the parsed json object (mine is in a variable called "p" so for instance p[1].list_id gives me the value for list id of the first row) and then setting these values to arguments and executing update statements in a loop. It works but thought there might be a cleaner way.

Ok I got where your going. No, I don't know of a bulk method. But from what is sounds like can you use the on-select to up update the tables each time they make a selection.
