Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Deleting records from a grid

    I have to delete records from a grid. Can the tbl.delete be used in an xbasic callback to delete records in a grid? I know there is a javascript method of doing this, but I need to disable the delete button under a condition (if the user tries to withdraw from class less than 2 days before it starts) and I know how to do this in xbasic, but not in javascript.

    Thank you,

    Re: Deleting records from a grid

    It's time to cozy up to Javascript, Rob.

    Is the Delete button part of the Grid row?

    Is the Class Start Date on the Grid as well?

    Provide these answers and we'll put together a Javascript function that can be used on the Button's Enable expression. That's the best way to do this.

      Re: Deleting records from a grid

      David,

      Ok, thanks for the push. The delete button is part of the grid row, as is the class start date.

      I have the security groups set so I'm the only one who sees the button for now. I'd like to button to stay on the screen no matter what, but if it's less than 2 days before start date, I'd like my customers to see an alert box that says, "It's too late to withdraw from this class." (and then not run the delete code, of course)

      I appreciate your help!

      Thank you,

      --Rob

        Rob,

        Here's how you can get this done in Javascript. I really don't like working with dates in Javscript... so I use a library called moment.js. It's brilliant... makes manipulating dates so easy.

        Here's a video using a grid and checking dates for deleting records...

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7n8zGOzNlWc

        And here's one about getting and setting up moment.js...

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mB3lmwDCdMA

        And this is the javascript code I used in the button Click event...

        Code:
        var startDate = {grid.Object}.getValue('G','INVOICEDATE',{Grid.RowNumber});
        var startDate = moment(startDate);

        var cancelDate = moment(startDate).subtract('days',1);

        var todaysDate = moment();

        var allowDelete = moment(todaysDate).isAfter(cancelDate);

        if (allowDelete){
        	alert('Sorry, it\'s too late to cancel this class');
        	}
        	else
        	{
        	//{grid.Object}.deleteRow({Grid.RowNumber});
        	alert('Deleting row ' + {Grid.RowNumber});
        	}

          take a look at this screencast.
          if this is not you are looking for please post back.

          http://screencast.com/t/BwzMIx2Ef2w6

          Code:
          var rn = {Grid.RowNumber};
          var d1 = {grid.Object}.getValue('G','START_DATE',rn);
          var d2 = new Date(d1);
          d2 = d2.getTime();
          var d3 = new Date();
          d3 = d3.getTime();
          var diff = d2 - d3;
          if (diff > (48*60*60*1000))
          	{
          	{grid.Object}.deleteRow(rn);
          	}
          else
          	{
          	alert('You cannot withdraw now, it is too late!!');
          	}
          edit: I did what you wanted but said the opposite in recording, my apologies.

              ...so if I wanted to use xbasic to send a confirmation of deletion email, how do I do that, given that I'm doing the delete in javascript, and the possibility that we won't do the delete at all if it's too late?

                so why not do them in xbasic, delete the record and send email at the same time.
                I am sure you can do it.

                  Re: Deleting records from a grid

                  Gandhi,

                  I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out how to delete a record in xbasic. I think this may be a start:

                  dim tbl as P
                  tbl = table.current()
                  tbl.change_begin()
                  tbl.delete()
                  tbl.change_end(.T.)

                  I just have to figure out how to capture the primary key for the record and then delete only that record.

                  Thanks,

                  --Rob

                    Re: Deleting records from a grid

                    I do not work with dbf so I am not going to tell how to delete a record and lead you wrong way.
                    but to get the primary key
                    make the grid editable, select the select delete box to none.
                    add a button and call it withdraw or something else.
                    create a function on the onClick event and on that function put a debug(1) and run the grid.
                    and click the button select the e object you will see all the fields in that record in e._currentRowDataNew and e._currentRowDataOld
                    then you can do anything you want with it.
                    thanks for reading

                      Re: Deleting records from a grid

                      Add a button to the grid named "Delete" or similar. Add an onClick event, make it a callback to a function named deleteRecord. Check "compute current row data" if your grid is read-only. The deleteRecord function might look like this:

                      function deleteRecord as c (e as p)

                      if date() - 2 < convert_type(e._currentRowDataNew.class_dt,"D")
                      msg = "Sorry, cannot cancel"
                      deleteRecord = "alert('"+msg+"');"
                      END
                      end if

                      todelete = e._currentRowDataNew.id 'Just get the field that IS the primary key.

                      filter = "id="+todelete ' adjust if the primary key is a character
                      result = record_delete("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\test.dbf",filter)
                      if result = 1
                      msg = "record deleted"
                      else
                      msg = "problem, record not found"
                      end if

                      deleteRecord = "alert('"+msg+"');{grid.Object}.refresh();"

                      end function
