Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Build 4290

If you need to build an application that gets data from the server (as any in other application) - but if we go offline after that, work on the data, and then when we hit the submit button, saves the data locally (may be with a warning message) and commits it to the database when the connection is restored?
Does the latest Build 4290 allow you to that?

I think when Alpha releases their "disconnected" version... it will be a big splash... so no... it's not going to let you do that... just yet. Just curious, what makes you ask?

BTW, when referring to Build 4290 you're actually referring to the "Addins" build... not the Version Build... which is where it's all happening. In this case you'd be referring to Build 2118.

      Re: Build 4290

Ok I get it now. I thought I am already on the new alpha disconnected release. It says alpha anywhere v2 (when I do alpha anywhere > help) - and now I am able to create standalone application - that is great. Did not know if we are getting more in the "disconnected" version. (I thought I am already enjoying the disconnected version.) Thanks for the clarification.

        Re: Build 4290

You could roll some kind of "disconnected" using HTML5 local storage right now but you will have to code all the javascript and WebSQL yourself though.

Here's a primer which gives a good overview

        http://diveintohtml5.info/storage.html#localstorage

But I would suggest waiting until Alpha rolls it out I'm sure there will be much less actual coding required.

Will be interesting to see how the offline/online synchronization events are handled by Alpha.

Also, according to that article linked above, the default is 5 megabytes of local storage available in current browsers.

I expect that might be the case for us too, so we might not be able to "disconnect" huge database tables.

I will definitely be interested to see what's possible though!

I watched that video, but I think I am missing something. You have to have a connection to access the application, right, so whats the point?

                  Re: Build 4290

I think the purpose of "disconnected" is more for offline/online synchronization for users who stray out of mobile coverage zones but still need to enter their data, and then later on they can sync the data back to the server when they are once again back in range of 3G/4G data signal.

... instead of creating totally stand-alone apps that don't need to talk to an A5 server at any point in their life. Is that what you were thinking with "disconnected"?
