Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to turn off error messages

I have a simple one web app that gathers Tax info from a third party API based on Zip Code. The problem I'm having is whenever I update a record in my database with the tax info, I get an error message. The record is still updated despite the error but I'd rather not have to continually tell all my users that they can ignore the error. The error message (attached) displays at the top of the page, above all controls. Any help would be appreciated.

That could be a bug in Alpha not sure. You cannot suppres these error messages. I would not recommend telling users that they just can ignore the error; you may very well corrupt your database.

I would try to create the simplest component possible using your database (what database are you using anyway ?) & see if you can reproduce the error then send in the whole thing as a bug report.

A bit of an "outside the box" suggestion... but would it be possible to change the back end database platform that contains your tables?
e.g. change to SQL Server Express or MySQL, instead of what you're using now (looks like R-Base from the error message)

Oh if only I could change the back end database. That is a huge job, fraught with many perils.
The back end is indeed R-Base and has always given us issues when linking with Alpha. Their ODBC driver seems to have been very poorly written. Selwyn has worked with us numerous times to overcome these issues but this time I was hoping to just bypass what I'm assuming is a pointless error message.

          I feel your pain

I've worked with several ODBC implementations in the past that were really buggy and frustratingly awful to work with.

Specifically: TopSpeed .TPS ODBC driver which was no good for updating but OK for data extraction only.

and MYOB ODBC which is still full of these random bugs so many years later

If the error is being thrown by your ODBC driver then I don't know what you can do...

Perhaps there is some hidden undocumented config file you can tweak that Alpha might share with you, to ignore the ODBC error message

Or thinking outside the box again.... can you do the entire database connection and input/output in Xbasic and trap all the errors yourself?

i.e. don't rely on the smarts of the grid to do it all for you, write code in the Xbasic events that do the equivalent. Or go extreme and migrate all your grids to the "behaves-like-a-grid" UX that Selwyn shows in a few videos (and in the demo app that comes with v12)

I have no idea if this will actually work or not!

I like your 'outside the box' thought, but I have no idea how to implement it. Are there any links you can direct me to that would help get me started?

I would suggest reading up on Xbasic server side events. Maybe you can keep all your grids, just manually handle the data load/save events.

Read up on creating recordsets via ODBC connections directly in your XBasic code.

              And error handling!

Re: How to turn off error messages

I did the update from an xbasic function instead of from the control. That way I was able to just ignore the error message. Thanks for the assistance.
