Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Dynamic List as you enter data

I'm sure this is an easy task in Alpha, but I've hit a mental block. I hope someone can help.

I have an web application where users enter new client information in a grid. Users enter the information from a list they've been handed. They enter ~2,000 clients per month and most of them are "new" so I wouldn't want them to slow down doing a "search" before entering each client. Instead. I'd like to have a list off to the side that updates with each letter entered in the client's Last Name.

So, if you want to visualize this: Imagine that the user starts a "New Record" and begins entering the Last Name. As he enters "Smi" all of the previously-entered clients with the Last Names of "Smith", "Smithers", "Smiley", etc. are displayed (along with First Name and Address). If the user sees the client that he's entering, he could click on that client and switch to "Edit Mode" and continue. If it's possible, I'd want all of the "Smith" entries to be displayed if the user enters "Smith" and then continues to "filter" as "First Name" is entered.

Perhaps, this can be accomplished with some kind of Dynamic Filter in the search field, but, since I thought someone has already done this (there might even be a video from Selwyn), I thought I'd ask and someone could point me in the right direction.

I'd appreciate any help or suggestions.

    Thanks,
    Phil

Re: Dynamic List as you enter data

That is easily handled by creating a lookup and setting that lookup to do just what you are asking take a look at the different look up settings. I use this feature myself when entering a new "phone call" in a web app. The field is a lookup to the existing table/field and if a match is found and you select it - you can choose whatever fill in fields you would like as well so its really as simple as clicking a few choices. Post back if you have any trouble!

You can also set other fields (like last name) to act as a filter in your look up so have fun!

Charles... thanks for the fast reply. I will work on it in the morning and I'll update the thread with my experience and how it worked for me. I really appreciate your help.

Re: Dynamic List as you enter data

I did what Charles suggested and it worked the way he described. HOWEVER, the "Lookup" function adds an "icon" for the look-up. I was hoping for a dynamic list that pops-up automatically as you type (e.g. Last Name) or as you go to the next field. With this system, the user has to make a conscious decision to do a look-up. I am trying to prevent the entry of duplicate clients by users (who, incidentally, are paid by how many entries they make... they won't want to slow down to call a look-up function).

If you have any other suggestions for accomplishing this task, I'd appreciate it.

take a look at the other options for the lookup
            auto-suggest
            edit-combo
they will provide the functionality you are looking for. they are right there at the setup area.
edit: charles has posted the same thought a minute earlier.
