Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Dbf not an Option for Creating Reports

Open the Web Projects Control Panel and then on Reports (Project). Click the New icon and then choose 'New Report'. What I see does not make sense. Below New Report in the window, it says: Create new Report for which Table or Set? After that, the only option is to create a report is based on SQL. There is no option to create a report based on DBF tables. Additionally, sets are found in the A5 Desktop, not in SQL, where I believe data in different tables are 'joined'.

Does anyone know the reason why reports cannot be created using dbf tables?

The web-side tools are probably just making an assumption that you're using SQL, which as you know is the best way to do this.

But you can still go to the regular control panel, create reports there against DBFs and still use them in your web app, as always.

Re: Dbf not an Option for Creating Reports

      Hi Steve,

True and that's what I have been doing. However, it doesn't offer the flexibility that the web tools offer. It will depend on how bad my customer wants the web reporting features.

      Thanks for responding.

I don't understand. What are you missing if you build your report against a DBF from the Control Panel? What's the difference? I'll confess I haven't done any of this with DBFs for web apps for many years now so there may be something here I don't know about.

Have you tried making a normal report from the control panel and then converting that report to a project report?

Are you talking about changing the Initial View property from PDF to HTML?

No, I'm talking about the utility that was built-in to automatically convert normal reports to project reports. It's been a few months since I've done it but basically it was a couple of mouse clicks to convert all my old reports to project reports and then BAM! No more stupid workspace library publishing problems. There's a button to import existing workspace reports on the web control panel when you select the reports category.

All my old reports were based on SQL though, so I'm not sure if it will work or not.

I found the link but it's only for SQL reports. Oh well, if I want to take advantage of the HTML, I will need to upsize the database. Thanks for the suggestion.

I haven't created an HTML report but judging from the videos, there are features in the HTML reports that are not in the desktop based reports.
