Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Save as Excel on Report shifting columns after first page

I am getting really weird results when saving a report to excel. This is a very simple tabular report. It looks like that after the first page of data, it shifts some of the columns to the left. It also changes the justification on some columns. Any suggestions on how to fix this?
I tried to upload the Excel file, but even though I have no trouble opening it, the message board upload told me it was an invalid file.

Yes Anita, the report to excel doesn't create a good result unless the report is very simple.

An alternative is to use the export to excel operation and include calculated fields that are desired.

          Alan,

for that, wouldn't I have to have some sort of grid on the screen? I am allowing my user to build an SQL statement that I then process in the background to a result set which I save to temp tables upon which I build the report. I'm not finding much explanation of 'Export to Excel' in the documentation. It talks about "Forms" and "Browses"??? I am using a UX component to gather the parts of the SQL statement from the user. I have built a few grids, but I'm not sure what it means by "Form" or "Browse"

Well, the Save as Text doesn't work worth a darn either. Is there some trick to getting it to put in some kind of delimiter, like a comma or a tab between fields?

Try a report with only a detail section with no headers or footers.

What I was referring to is an operation that you can see on the desktop control panel. You can follow it as an example to generate code to read the column names and generate an excel file via a callback without a grid.

this just gets more confusing all the time. I went to the control panel and selected Operation. A popup came up that said: Step 1: Select Operation and I selected 'Export Records'. Then Step 2 said 'Select Table/Set', but none of my tables were there.

Operations are for dbf tables, not sql.

What kind of a report is it? A layout report (I think that's what they are called - as vs. a "freeform" report) should render properly in Excel.

Grids have an Excel export checkbox under properties.

If you want to get more fancy you can use Action JavaScript Excel export which gives you far more control.

You can use a passive linked or an active linked table here.

If you are only going to export data, I'd choose passive linked and script a refresh along with the export operation.

It was a freeform report. I deleted it and rebuilt it as a layout report. Now it doesn't run at all and I don't have any idea why.
