Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    AlphaFive New user experience

I purchased Alpha five before 6 months and still I am struggling to create a simple web application out of it.
I searched message board and posted message and tried all the videos but nothing shows me a light in my application development.
I come from desktop windows application development background using Delphi, I find learning curve is very steep in alphafive , I get 100 emails from twinpeaksresearch LLC marketing their programs, but for unfortunate persons who purchased alphafive and outside US, It is very difficult to attend these expensive programs.

I am sorry to say that support for Alphafive is next to worst. I suggest people at alphafive to have a look at DEVEXPRESS components, which I use in Delphi for more than 5 years. Their support is excellent ,their support team attitude is ask me more.

I still feel that I made a right decision in purchasing ALPHAFIVE. It is a very strong and beautiful product which I say is real RAD application in market for web and mobile development. But support is very bad considering there is a steep learning curve. If Alphafive have a dedicated support team and remove their proprietary Server licence then I am sure ALPHAFIVE will be much stronger force in application development with huge developer base. At least you should allow 10 tickets per year subscription. What is the point in having a very good product and small developer base.

I think my queries are very basic (may be that is the reason it was ignored).

    1) How to use custom sql statement to insert data in dialog component without using genie . I see some videos for grid component but I need some guide for dialog component.
    2) How to change arguments in server side when performing CRUD operations. I changed value in e.arguments object in dialogvalidate or afterdialogvalidate events , but these values are not inserted into table.

Any videos or sample codes on the above queries are very much appreciated.

    Regards
    Wajeed

    Re: AlphaFive New user experience

    1) the dialog is same as UX.

This is the place to go for searching videos on the UX (i.e the dialog)
    http://www.youtube.com/user/AlphaSoftwareInc/videos

on the youtube Alpha Software channel menu bar,
next to the word "About" is a little magnifying glass icon
click the magnifying glass and search for the keyword: UX

This will show all the Alpha videos related to the UX component
    e.g.

    http://www.youtube.com/user/AlphaSof...earch?query=UX

You will learn a lot if you watch all the videos there

One thing that is perhaps not really explained that well is that the UX is kind of "opposite" to the grid with the way data loads (not a very good explanation I know, but more of a clue, maybe someone can elaborate on this more succinctly, I am still getting my head around the UX component and not 100% there yet)

Also, once you find some good videos on youtube, if you want to download them locally to watch on your local computer you can go here
    http://www.viddler.com/channel/alpha01803?page=20
and Ctrl + F to find the video of the same as Youtube
and you can download the video from Viddler

Alternatively, if you don't want to go to Viddler,
there are youtube video downloader add-ons that work with Firefox,
e.g. MP4 Downloader by Jake Hartz (current version is 1.3.3)
is easy to use, it puts a "Download" button inside firefox, right underneath the youtube video.

Except I prefer the Viddler downloads for clearer picture (less compression) but one annoying thing with Viddler is you have to rename each video to the subject title, where as if you use the Youtube Downloader Add-On it automatically names the file correctly.

For question (2) please see these

    http://www.youtube.com/user/AlphaSof...rch?query=CRUD

If you can dedicate several weeks where you go into Alpha a few hours every day, and do some experiments alongside watching the videos, you will become more comfortable and proficient.

Good luck and stick with it, the end result is worth it!

P.S. Take a look at the Panel Navigator and Panel Cards, even if you are building for general web browser and not building for mobile. The panel navigator works in any browser, and the panel layouts and panel navigation animations are pretty cool.

How is DevExpress different than the Alpha environment? We both have online and classroom training, an active user forum, many of the developers on this forum, and all of the developers at www.iadn.com are available for paid support, we both have documentation and you can purchase additional support directly from Alpha. How is DevExpress different (I assume it is, but I am not sure how)?

          Wajeed,

You only have 9 posts so you haven't asked many questions for sure. But that's okay. Here are a couple of random points:

Ask 1 question per post. That's the best way to get a response.

The videos are good, but you don't even have to go to YouTube or Viddler. Just click on the "Videos" icon on the toolbar from either controlpanel and the list pops up. You can filter the video list by category or select words. Very useful.

            Dear Steve

Please note, it is not my intention to offend Alpha Team, I just expressed my inability and frustration in my mail, if somebody got offended on my message , i am really sorry

How is DevExpress different (I assume it is, but I am not sure how)?

I hope you are asking this just to improve Alpha customer support

            Please go to this URL

            https://www.devexpress.com/Support/Center/

and search for any query , there you will find the difference, I would love to have some thing like this in Alpha. For your information my subscription expired more than 5 years before, but still if i post a query i get reply. i never paid for any of this support.

Appreciate if you can help me in solving any of the queries.

            Thanks

              Re: AlphaFive New user experience

I went to the support center and it is no different than using this Alpha forum, except the Forum software is a lot better, shows "solutions" better and has pre-defined filters. No one is taking any offense, but if you point out what is better maybe we can build it.

                Steve,

I think i made my point,

but if you point out what is better maybe we can build it.
                a) That is not a forum, that is support center operated by Devexpress paid professionals, there forum URL https://community.devexpress.com/forums/.
                b) All queries are given direct answers mostly provided with sample codes.

Lets stop discussing this topic and move forward with alphafive.

                  Re: AlphaFive New user experience

OK, no problem, I won't continue the discussion. Except to say I did go register for a Support account at DevExpress and reviewed the whole thing including tracing back to who is providing the advice. It really is just like this forum except that it is organized as a Company Support Ticket System, and is a much, much better Forum software, and is mostly (not 100%) supported by guys that say "DevExpress Support" in their title. I can see clearly that it reflects well on the DevExpress company and Alpha Software would greatly benefit if they had a similar system to show they are providing support.

A lot of new users want "Alpha" to provide support, but the truth is that we Developers are typically in the best position to provide support to other developers. I say typically, because there are some specific issues that are best handled by Alpha engineers. But the day-in-day-out stuff, that is US.

I do hear what you are saying though, the DevExpress Support model is much cleaner because a smaller number of highly qualified professionals are responding to questions. That creates a cleaner more consistent and trustworthy level of support. Here on this forum, it is very possible that someone will respond with inaccurate information, maybe because they are new to Alpha as well.

Thanks for pointing all this out, I enjoyed reviewing the whole DevExpress site; looks like a good development platform, company and user base.
