Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Submitting a new record generates new records in another table

    A particular part of my alpha project handles task management. I have one dbf table with project information and another with individual tasks assigned to those projects. Every project created will need the same five tasks. Is there a "simple" action javascript that when a new project is created, the 5 tasks are created as new records in the tasks table?

    Hi Shane..

    I would just attach an Xbasic Enter new record command to the Save button for the project..

      Thanks Steve... When I use the xbasic genie to create the script I need It produces this:

      'Open the table that you want to update...
      dim tbl as p
      tbl = table.open("jobduedateprojects",FILE_RW_SHARED)

      tbl.enter_begin()
      tbl.PROJECT_NA = "Test"
      tbl.TASK = "Production"
      tbl.enter_end(.t.)
      tbl.close()

      However when I insert this into the server-side xbasic of an onclick event I get the error:

      It says it can't find the file but the table is definitely there and named correctly. Any idea where I screwed up?

        Hi Shane..

        Your attachment won't open but the code looks right - but you may need to take the linking id field from the main table and insert this into the new record using a variable..

          So I have since been able to avoid the original error that was happening where it could not find the database by changing the name of the table I was trying to insert a record into. Apparently "jobduedateprojects" was too long. When I changed it to "projtasks" the script quit throwing errors and I was able to enter a new record.

          The wall I am running into now is I need to pull the information in a text box from the current dialog as a variable and pass it to the xbasic code that is creating the new record. I have fought this for 2 days and have read everything I can find. Variables are slightly above my experience, but if I could find a close enough example I believe I could make it work.

          The xbasic that is running correctly is:

          dim tbl as p
          tbl = table.open("c:\alphaweb\projtasks.dbf",FILE_RW_SHARED)

          tbl.enter_begin()
          tbl.PROJECT_NAME = convert_type(projnam,"Character")
          tbl.TASK = "Production"
          tbl.enter_end(.t.)
          tbl.close()

          with "projnam" as my variable, where should I define "var projnam = {dialog.object}.getValue("Project_Name")" so that the xbasic code picks it up? I have the xbasic firing with onclick of a button.

            take a look at this

            few suggestions if I am permitted to.
            you are on version12 with lots of goodies and eye candy.
            consider sql backend.
            you can do lots of things with that. yes I know you can upgrade later on.
            but it won't be as good as you do from the beginning.
            if for some reason you must use dbf, then it is your choice.
            thanks for reading

              Thank you Gandhi! That was exactly the type of example I needed. I was able to adjust the code accordingly and produce the records that I needed.
