Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Question about the setTimeout function - what interval?

    Hello,
    What is the interval to put in the settimeout function?
    Any calculation to know this number? or it is a trial and error process?
    Is it better to just use an ajaxcall back instead of it?

    What I have is listbox where a row is added and I want to calculate the total rows availabe.
    I am using a settimeout to wait before counting the row numbers. but what number should it be?

    Thank you

    I think it's trial & error. It depends upon what you are doing. Try 500 milliseconds and if that works adjust down, else adjust up.

      Re: Question about the setTimeout function - what interval?

      Hi Peter,
      I am a bit confused :( what if I test it with my internet connection speed then my customers has a slower speed? will it keep working or I will have to adjust "more up".
      Does this waiting process has something to do with the internet speed or with server was speed?

      Thanks

        Re: Question about the setTimeout function - what interval?

        Hi Paul,

        Remember, this is JavaScript. So the timer-delay is on the client side (browser). So 500 milliseconds is 500 milliseconds on the user's machine. Of course, it could be an issue depending upon what you are doing and how you are doing it. It can get confusing.

          Rather than a timer I would use A5.executeThisThenThat which is far more reliable

          http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...d.php?110806#2

          I was writing a UX which ran javascript onInitializeComplete, which in turn would run a callback to XBasic to run a SQLServer stored procedure which added some new records to a table, and then I wanted to display the records in a list formatted as tabs for a panel navigator.

          It would work most of the time but not always (the rows were always added to the table but sometimes the list of "tabs" would try and render before the new rows were available in the table)

          So to ensure that the callback had completed before trying to use the newly created records to create the tabbed menu, A5.executeThisThenThat was the way to go.

          Here's a specific example

          Code:
          function InitTimeSheet() {

          var TRIPDATA = {dialog.object}.getParentObject();
          var RN = TRIPDATA.getSelectedRow();  //rownumber
          var IDAYSHEET = TRIPDATA.getValue("G","iDaySheet",RN);

          //create and set the value of the "daysheet" state variable
          //for use on the server side for the SQL Server stored procedure parameter,
          //which is called in XBasic function that is called by the runAction callback below in InitPart2,
             var obj= {daysheet: IDAYSHEET};
             {dialog.object}.setStateInfo(obj);

             A5.executeThisThenThat(InitPart2,InitPart3);

          } //End InitTimeSheet

          function InitPart2() {
          // create Timesheet table records (if needed) for each person on this DaySheet
            {dialog.object}.runAction('runSPtoCreateTimesheetRecordsUsingDaysheetID');

          //NOTE: runAction runs asynchronously
          // it sends a message from the browser to the server, requesting XBasic code to execute on the server
          // in the meantime, the javascript engine moves on, and the remainder of this function will process.
          // This code will not wait for the call to the server to actually return javascript back to the browser
          // so any javascript returned from this runAction will very likely execute last of all in the browser
          // i.e. the code below the dotted line will execute first, before the javascript returned from the runAction callback
          // HENCE the reason for splitting code into separate functions and using A5.executeThisThenThat in the main one above
          } //End InitPart2

          function InitPart3() {
          // create the left hand side menu List datasource of Employee name rows from Timesheet table (iTimesheetID is key)
             {dialog.object}.runAction('GenerateMenuListJSON');
             {dialog.object}.panelSetActive("homepanel",true);
          } //End InitPart3

            Thank you Michael,
            This is exactly what I am looking for.
            I will try it today and see if I can get it to work.

            Thanks again
