Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Submit button on a panel doesn't save data

    I have textbox fields that are updateable, data bindings are set, I added "ExecuteServerSideAction("Save Data::Save_Submitted_Data_to_Table_s_")" to server side afterdialogvalidate event. When I enter data then press submit I get an error and if I review the dbf table a new record was not entered. The error is in the attached JPG Image. Any help is appreciated...

    That is a Javascript error. Without your component I do not know an easy way to determine the reason for the error. Note that this error is very common when using session variables that are not present in working preview. There are ways around this but maybe the easiest check is to publish the component and view with a browser to see if it is working there.

      At the moment I think Google Chrome has the best way to debug javascript libraries that have had their white-space removed, like the library in your picture. If you can get the error to display in Chrome then turn on Developer Tools (F12) in Chrome before the error displays. When Chrome brings up the error then click the {} in the bottom toolbar to have chrome reformat the alpha library into readable form. From there you can work backwards, setting break points, and re-running it to figure out what sort of thing is triggering the error.

        debug screen shot attached...When published, no error message occurs. When I press submit there is no response from the browser. In Chrome, I did a debug as instructed and it definateley has an error but I don't know how to interpret it...

          On that screen shot, notice the status bar line near the bottom that reads "{} Line 1030, Column 228". If you click on the "{}" there, chrome will reformat the JavaScript into a readable format and it should highlight the exact statement that is triggering the error. From there, read backwards, setting break points and rerunning the code to see where the value comes from that is triggering the error. When the Chrome Developer Tools stops on a break point (or an error, I think) there is a panel on the right-hand side with a section titled, "Call Stack". You can use that to jump backwards through the functions (up to the Event) that led up to the function with the error.

            That worked and I can see it clearly but it doesn't make any sense. What is the "ParentNode" the error refers to?

              Re: Submit button on a panel doesn't save data

              So, it looks like the JavaScript is having trouble displaying an error message that is being returned from an XBasic field validation. When you stop it in the debugger there, you should be able to hover over the "errorID" variable and see bubble help with the control ID that is having problems - the very tail end gives you the control ID. If you have a repeating section then the second to last part of the name has the row number, like ".R3."

              From where the error is occurring it looks like you have the Dialog configured to display errors as icons. The js line that says, "var iEle = $(errorId);" gets a pointer to the control (or the containing control) that has the error. The "if (iEle.tagName)" is checking to see if that control has a "tagName" associated to it and is a regular control like a "DIV" for a radio button group or a "TEXTAREA" for a multi-line input field, etc.

              It appears the "else" part of the "if" is being executed, so what ever type of control you are using, in conjunction with the style of error message, is giving the library some difficulty. You should check what type of control you have selected in the dialog builder. For example, I think Alpha used to trigger an error right in this spot if you had a Hidden control type with xbasic validation and you selected "Icon" as the error display method in the component's properties.

              I would suggest changing the error display style to either "Global" or "Tip" -- it looks like those two methods would avoid the error. But more importantly, maybe you could post back here as to what type of control is generating this error.

              You also might want to try the current pre-release. Yesterday's pre-release was build # 4316. I see you are on build 4266.

                For testing I enclose the Javascript statements in try catch construct. This shows me the error exactly.

                try{
                // Copy all or part of the Javascript code here.
                } catch (error){alert('Testing Error: ' + error.message);}
