Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Backup Request when starting Program

I have a issue with the Alpha Anywhere backup system. I have never set it and I am not sure where to find it but each time I start Alpha Anywhere I get asked if I want to backup the program or skip it.

Does anyone know how that works? I'd like ot turn it off for now and perhaps later use it but right now I need it off.

Oh, that automatic DAILY backup has saved me a number of times. Sometimes a component will either go bad on its own or some code might get added to it that breaks it and it's like impossible to figure what is wrong with it without starting over or going to a backup. To change WHERE the backups are made then after opening the project go to the window or tab labeled "Control Panel". Selecting the "Control Panel" window changes the menu choices of the main "Tools" menu; it puts a "Backup/Restore Workspace // Backup Workspace" menu option that lets you configure the path of where the backups are stored. It is important that the path be set properly when you are allowing it to do backups. If you really want to disable the backups for the workspace then with either the regular "Control Panel" or the "Web projects control panel" active, select the "View / Settings" from the main menu. Select "Workspace / backup" from left-hand side navigator. Uncheck the "Require periodic...."

Re: Backup Request when starting Program

I just finished stepping through your email and I get it. Just to be sure will this actually copy everything in my workspace that I am working on like UXs, Grids, Style Sheets etc? I've also made a folder that is convenient to locate where the backups are stored.

I've used Alpha Anywhere for over a year and have wondered if Alpha's backup is reliable. Instead of using the Alpha Backup which by the way "I did not know how to use" I have been zipping my desktop daily. Do you believe that the Alpha Backup is reliable and if so I can start using it and stop zipping my desktop.

Oh, William, you are putting me in the hotspot here, huh? - "Do you believe that the Alpha Backup is reliable " - (see my very last sentence below)

To tell you the truth, I don't trust any one particular backup fully and it is annoying as heck that I had to disable my WD Smartware from backing up my Alpha development folders automatically when files are saved. But on the brighter side, Alpha has a secondary backup going on that is really cool: anytime I save a component it saves the prior version to a subfolder named, "__backup.backup" . I don't know how to set how many prior versions it keeps, but mine seems like it will go on forever or at least until I erase the old backups. I think the folder it uses for that comes from "Control Panel / View / Settings / [System / Directories]" - mine is blank. Restoring a file from that backup location is built-in to the web applications control panel and accessed by right-clicking a component and selecting "Restore Backup".

I will admit that it is important to periodically verify that Alpha is making the backups as expected, by going out to Windows explorer, finding the backup and looking at its contents.

There is one bug I know of in "Control Panel / Tools / Backup Restore Workspace / Backup" and that is the "Retain Previous Backups" fails when you enter anything in the "Description" box (I don't use that feature much, so I have not bothered to report it -- maybe they figure if a Description is entered then it is up to the user to make the description unique to avoid replacing a previous zip file of the same name.)

I'm glad you mentioned the part about adding the description. I'll do a backup and try restoring it and see what I get. I'm always worried that if a file is in use it will not back up. Like back in the dos days where when you were using a file you'd get a sharing error and the file would not get backed up. That's why I have been zipping my work. I know 100 percent that I get everything but Alpha's backup is so much easier and faster.

Just to clarify - there are two different backups going on in Alpha: 1) The one that you get when you open a workspace, which is same as "Control Panel / Tools / Backup-Restore workspace", and 2) then automatic backup of each component as it is saved which can be accessed through "Web Projects Control Panel / (right-click on a file) / Restore Backup". Just as a matter of course, I would not do the first type of backup when any of the components are open in the designer.
