Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha Security without (the mention of) DBF tables

I am planning to implement Alpha Security using just SQL Server Tables [using Alpha security tables that I am going to copy/build/create on remote SQL Server].
I stayed away from the Alpha Security because of the issues some had with the DBF tables need to refresh say the SQL Server tables whenever any change was made.
I know it does not matter where the tables reside (DBF or SQL server, etc) - but I am afraid of the above refresh issue?
Does anyone have any documentation that show how to setup security using Alpha Security Tables straight on SQL server or mysql or Oracle tables?
If it does not mention the word "DBF tables" - I would like to have a look at it.
DBF tables confuses me - so would like to stay away from those! help!

    Hi,
Read this thread see if this helps at all
    http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...151#post675151

It seems that the SQL Security is done behind the scenes via Live-Link tables. Seems to me that within Alpha it still thinks it is dealing with DBF tables but in reality it is looking at SQL tables via Live-Link tables

as far as I know that does not exist.
the tables are sql tables but the field names are mapped to the dirty word. alpha constructs active link tables but also seem to require the dbf files.
it is possible dbf files are used in the development machines and sql via active link will be used in the server. regardless the answer is no. it does not exist.
but it is surprising, they can move the mountain with javascript etc but will run back to dbf world for security!!
      thanks for reading

When they say you have to refresh that is only if you make a change to the table structure not data.

I've never had to refresh after they were setup

Just to pile on. You only need the the *.dbp tables on the server. You do need the other dbf security tables on the development machine in the web project folder- but only for purposes of development. Alpha is not storing any data in the dbf files in either case. It's just a convenient "pass through". Of course if you app is dbf based, then data is stored in the security dbf files.

Re: Alpha Security without (the mention of) DBF tables

When the security uses SQL data, it does create active link tables, but they are only used for mapping purposes to store the connection data and the field map to map the security fields to the fields in the SQL tables. No data is stored in the files, and all CRUD operations go directly to the SQL database. The Active link construction is used as it includes of the the meta data for the connections. Technically, they could just be called mapping files, as that is their only purpose.

As Peter correctly points out, all of the websecurity_*.* files are needed in the development environment to allow complete access to the data, but when published, the published folder only needs the websecurity_*.dbp files. These are the files with the field maps and connection data. The other websecurity_*.* could be deleted, although that take very little space.

The only time the "active link" tables would need refreshed is if the table structure for the security tables in the SQL Database changed. The refresh would just update the field map. We don't recommend editing the SQL web security tables after they are built as they should be used strictly for security and only accesses through the security methods
