Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Open Detail UX automatically after Search

    I have a search grid that allows the user to open a UX dialog for the detail view. I would like to automatically open the Detail View UX if only one record is returned from the Search part of the grid. I'm assuming I'll need to do this in the Server Side AfterSearch event and reference the count using:

    if Args.Info.TotalRecords = 1

    The question is how then to automatically open my UX component and have it populate from the selected (and only) grid row without having the user have to click the Show Details button. What I need is something like the Open a UX Dialog script that I have associated with the OnClick event of the Show Details button.

    I always like to eliminate extra steps for my users where possible.

    Brad,

    Just create an action JavaScript that opens the UX like you did on the button. Then call that action from your search event.

      Yup! That did the trick. All I did was create the Action Javascript in the Javascript Functions of the Grid naming it OpenUXDialog then set it up exactly like I'd done with the button. I grabbed the code to call it by clicking the link on the Define Javascript Actions form. In my Server Side AfterSearch I added the following code:

      (This code only worked partially...see the posts below to see my ultimate solution and disregard the code in this post.

      Code:
      with PageVariables
      if Args.Info.TotalRecords = 1
      	dim aa as p
      	aa = args.rtc.A_AjaxResponses
      	aa[].text = "{grid.object}.runAction('OpenUXDialog');"
      	aa[..].id = 100 'the order in which AjaxResponses are sent to the browser
      end if
      end with
      and Voila the detail form opens to the correct record when the search returns only a single record. Thanks Peter!

        There is one glitch. If you have the "Hide Grid when no search active" checked then if the first search returns only one record the grid has not been initialized and nothing shows on the UX Detail form. Once the grid has been opened any subsequent searches that result in only one record will bring up the form correctly. The workaround for now seems to be to let the grid show always even before a search has been created. The obvious disadvantage to this is that records the user is not interested in are selected and returned when the grid is initially opened.

          Well I spoke too soon. Iterative testing shows that in some instances searches that result in a single record bring up a fully populated UX Dialog while others result in the dialog being blank. I'll have to do some debugging to see why this is happening. Could be that I'll need to move the call to open the dialog to another event that fires later and simply set a flag for it in the AfterSearch event.

            Okay, solved it! For anyone interested here are the steps which also solved the problem with hiding the grid when the search is not active:

            In the Server Side event OnGridExecute I added the code to initialize my single record flag:
            Code:
            session.SingleRecord = .f.
            Next in the AfterSearch event I used the following to set the flag after a search:
            Code:
            with PageVariables

            if Args.Info.TotalRecords = 1
            	session.SingleRecord = .t.
            else
            	session.SingleRecord = .f.
            end if

            end with
            Finally in the OnExistingRowRender event I check to see if the SingleRecord flag is true and if so I call the ActionJavascript function to open the UX Detail:
            Code:
            if session.singlerecord
            	e.javascript = "{grid.object}.runAction('OpenUXDialog');"
            	session.singlerecord = .f.
            end if
            Thanks again Peter for pointing me in the right direction! Hopefully this helps someone else with the same or similar issue.
