Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Populate and save as new entry

Okay, so before I go into what looks like a long tedious process of populating my dialog using the method described in video D57, I am hoping I can get some insight on here for an easier way for me to accomplish what I am trying to do. To break it down simply I have a button on a dialog that gives the user the option to load data from the tables of a "Trip" they've done before and chosen to save (by save I mean I've put a simple logical column in the table that is 1 if the user checked a radio button to save a trip when they put it in originally). So I load these "saved" trips into a list in a pop-up window that the user can select from and then click a button that says "Load saved trip". Now is where it gets tricky, I want them to be able to save the data (and any edits they choose to make) from the loaded trip as a new entry in the tables (i.e. do an INSERT with a new ID), but it obviously wants to do an UPDATE. I'm setting the primary key for the most top level table when the dialog initializes (this is just because I've had issues in the past with the auto-incremenation and the fact this is a very complex and large dialog), and so when I manually changed this ID back to the one it was originally set to when the dialog was loaded (the ID gets overwritten obviously when I do the loading of the "saved" trip using populate javascript action) and tried to save but it didn't like that.

So simply, other than manually loading the data into the dialog using the techniques from the video D57, is there a way to save populated data as a new entry into the tables? I thought about using the javascript CRUD action but this only lets me do an insert into a single table and as you can imagine this dialog is tied to quite a few tables with different parent-child links. Thought maybe I could do multiple CRUDs (one for each table that needs to be save too) but I can't even get one of them to work so I don't want to go through this process either if its bound to be a no go anyway!

    Thanks for the help!

    BUMP!

Long dead thread I know, but trying to do the same myself. Were you able to find a solution to this?

I ended up doing it completely with xbasic in an Ajax callback, i.e. the user would load a list of their saved trips, select which one they wanted to load, then click load trip. I would then lock the screen with a pop up window (so the user couldn't do anything), then load all the data tied to that trip from the tables using typical xbasic code and populate the dialog with that data (didn't use the javascript actions that allow you to populate a dialog from tables). Once this was done I also had to create multiple records in other tables (that were attached to this dialog) so that the rest of the application would work. I haven't touched this side of my application in a long time so I'm not sure if there is an easier way to accomplish this but I will say this was a very long and tedious task.

        Ok thanks for the reply!

I was hoping I could avoid xbasic as my screen is populated with data from 10+ tables. Long and tedious is an understatement. Will keep brainstorming the idea.

        Thanks,
