Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Problem using MS Exchange to send email through from AAV2 mobile app

Can't even get a successful test connection after setting up an Email Profile. I provide (given to me by my the company for whom I am doing this) a username and password for the sending email account and the server name, along with the domain name although that does not seem to be used by AA. I THINK I've tried all the combinations and permutations possible in setting up the email profile and nothing seems to work, just to get a test connection setting up the Email Profile. No matter which of the four possible SMTP Authentication Methods I choose, every attempt results in the following error message:

Connect to Outgoing (SMTP) Server failed:
The hostname might be incorrect or the server may be down.
    Socket timeout connecting to host

I have AAv2 set up on ZebraHost as a subdomain of the client company's web site elsewhere; am I technically setting up a relay and could this be the problem? I am NOT an Exchange expert...

Thanks in advance for any help.

Frank, users of the app will create (inspection) records consisting of several text fields and a photo. One-to-many of those records are turned into a PDF report and emailed to a client and we's like the report to come from an email account of the company doing the inspections (and using this app.)

And you are using the email profile in the web project properties ? Chances are that SMTP is blocked on your internet connection at your office (usually is) , Zebrahost will probably have to open a firewall port as well for it to work on their side. I would suggest however to use the Mandrill email service; it is very fast & very well implemented in AA and it allows to send emails from any domain you want.

Thanks, Frank. I started with the idea that Mandrill would be the way to go, but so far that has been nixed by the client. That may need to change as we are running into a very hard deadline. Zebrahost has been working hard on this for a few days too - just to get a stable test connection with the client's system has been impossible. Zebrahost was able to get a few messages through, then nothing. Currently it appears (and we hope) the problem is in the MX record we asked for (probably mistakenly) on my client's system and have since removed; we are waiting for it to "expire". Driving all of us crazy; integrating just a few things for this mobile app turns out to be a lot harder than it looks at first glance...

Even if you manage to get it to work with the customer's Exchange server it will be slow & tie up your app, with Mandrill it will have no speed impact. If the customers wants to track what has been sent then simply Cc tem in at some address.

Thanks for that info, Frank - I will pass that along and maybe it will help turn the tide. What I hear from the client: 'there are over 80 folks with phones sending emails to the office constantly and there are no problems - why can't your app do that?' or words to that effect.

                Simon,

I use my exchange server to relay e-mail for my app's. I created a new receive connector and called it relay. I added the ip address of my Alpha Server to the list of remote servers that the exchange server is allowed to receive mail from. Authentication is "Externally Secured". Important also is the permissions group. You have to select Anonymous Users and Exchange Servers. Those should be the only options selected. I mainly relay for network scanners/internal applications but have to relay mail for some external servers. In my firewall I only allow smtp connectivity from the static ip addresses of those external servers. You don't want spammers to be able to use your clients exchange server to do their business. They will find their selves blacklisted very quickly. It's entirely possible and even easy but you need to do it the right way to ensure that you don't compromise yourself. I would be glad to assist you further if needed. I built and maintain my exchange server and have worked with all versions of exchange. I am currently using exchange 2010. Let me know if I can help you further.

Thanks, Josh! I've sent this along to the Exchange Server admin for him to try. I very much appreciate your help so far and will definitely update you here on what transpires.

                    Simon,

Did they create an account that you could use to authenticate when connecting to the exchange server?

Re: Problem using MS Exchange to send email through from AAV2 mobile app

Yes, there is an account from which emails are sent from the app, and it is the test found within AA setup that showed the problem a few days back. Since then the good folks at Zebrahost have been sending test messages and at first they went through and then stopped abruptly, with a few minutes I believe. Does that properly answer your question, Josh, or is there a different account about which you are thinking/asking?
