Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Hi Jim,

Are you using grid or UX when creating your order?
You could look into using the lookup property, this is available in both grid and UX. I use this very often to open up a model window where I can choose a text from a different table, but then instead of returning the text I return the id for row in the table and then save this in my field.
    Kind regards

Using UX, i have a list control populating textbox controls for updating the order. It populates the productid field, I just succeeding in selecting the product id field and using a lookup to choose by product name to change the productid field. What i would like is to see the product name instead of the productID field when selecting to edit in the first place.

Re: Update Product ID but choose by Product name in a list

So if I get you right, lookup is working now when you add a new product from the lookup. But you would like to be able to see the productname in your textbox wheh you have click a product in the list control. Correct?
If so you can do this in more then one way.
        1. Have the list control pass the productname to a textbox together with the productid, this can be done by relations in your query for the list control. You don't have to show it
        2. You can also use action script lookup and fill in to get the productname by it's productid.
        3. there are still others ways to do this, depending on how your UX is configured but we would properly need some more information's about how your ux is set up. Is it databound etc. or are you just using a list control.
        Kind regards

thanks for helping!!! I'm getting data from sql, have product name populating the product name field in the ux and product id populating its field. I guess i just want to show the product name field, change it using a look up to the products table browsing the name field but then populating the id field with the product id when i submit it just sends the id field....seems like i'm getting close, I guess I don't know how to choose in one field but have that choice populate the id field which i know i can hide when it's all working...

Re: Update Product ID but choose by Product name in a list

Yes, this is the way I do it also. I choose from a text by using lookup, but then I fill in maybe more text fields in my UX with data from the lookup.
When I have an ID field, I hide it if there is no reason to show the information to the user. But with lookup, you can still fill hidden fields also.

In your cause, where you are working with orders, you are properly only interested in saving the productId in a many-to-many link table and nothing more.
But the user needs to see products name, Product orderNo, Manufacturer etc. These data are maybe in your products table. So you could still fill these in by the lookup, and if you don't need to save them, have the fields be read only or make the field not update able.
              Kind regards
