Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Online users

    How can I know the online users? I have a login table but the problem is, if the users does not close the session I don't know if it is online or not.

    Thanks.

    Re: Online users

    Hi,

    I guess your online until you logout or the session times out. You can check the a5ws_login file in the app path root or setup an Access log on the WAS. To keep an eye on whats going on I add the following to the footer of my pages. I assume online users have updated the table in the last 15 minutes (session timeout). If the user is likely to stay on one page for some time I add this to a components timer. I then use a few grids linked to tbl000Audit to track user activity and history. The activity recorded can also be used for load balancing.

    if a5ws_getcurrentuser() <> "" then
    Dim Host as c = Request.Host
    Dim cn as sql::connection
    cn.open("::Name::frame")
    Dim sql as c = "INSERT INTO tbl000Audit (UserName, App, DateTime, page, IP, Device, WAS) SELECT '"+stritran(a5ws_getcurrentuser(),chr(39),chr(39)+chr(39))+"', 'GlassMan', { fn NOW() }, '"+Request.Script_Name+"', '"+Request.REMOTE_ADDR+"', 'web', '"+Host+"'"
    cn.execute(sql)
    end if

    I hope this help.

      Re: Online users

      I like Peter's solution because it only counts users who are logged in, which is what you care about. You cannot just count the number of session folders or count the number of sessions because EVERY hit on your website create a session, including when Google indexes your site.

      Peter's solution keeps a continuous log of activity. You can also insert a record in a table when the person logs in, and then run a CRON process that looks for records that are (for example) 15 minutes old with no update, and delete those record. The table will be close to who is actually logged in but not necessarily perfectly accurate.

          Re: Online users

          Its should be in the root folder of you application. Same place as your {application}.adb file

          WAS = web application server, the application server you run on you web server

            Peter,
            I found this file only in the source folder. I did not found it in the local root folder, nor remote root folder.
            Thanks for the clarification.

              Hi Peter,
              I think you run the audit function on javascript settimeout or setinterval, am I right? What's happens when you leave a page? The thread it's killed? Now if I navigate between pages the used memory grows up.
              I have implemented the script in header page that is included in each page <%a5 a5w_include("header.a5w")%>

              Thanks.

                Hi,

                Not sure I understand, No settimeout or setinterval, just the xbasic, "<%a5 a5w_include("header.a5w")%>" sounds good.
