Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Edit Combo doesn't work on touch devices - alternatives?

I need to use the edit combo for a drop down because I'm selecting by one value and storing another in another field.

On a mobile device or pad the dropdown "flashes" open and then immediately closes making is really unworkable in a mobile world. It also looks different on the computer than a standard drop down but I can live with that.

Question: how can I make this edit combo work OR what is my alternative?

Thanks in advance - I need help asap as I have thousands of users on this every day....

set your max height to 300px, set your width to 100% in the edit combo lookup settings, then once you see it working tweak to suit your app, 100's of users wow - what is it? - I found you - very impressive.

The edit combo does work very well on all mobile devices that I have tested it on, just weighing in...

        Charles,

Yes - that is me. When you say "it works very well" what are your settings? Again, mine don't so obviously I need to do something more.

        Thanks in advance!

Re: Edit Combo doesn't work on touch devices - alternatives?

Actually I got rid of the max setting entirely, but I am sure it's a good practice to use it. I just set the height to 5in and so far that seems to work well on mobile devices. I do not recall any special settings to be honest. Are you sure you have all of the usual stuff set up right? like the software version matches the server version, etc.?
Also I would check, the look up settings and make sure you have a valid connection setup, and I always define a template. I would think you do not have a connection setup just because your saying the dropdown opens and then closes like it's making the call and the call fails.

Honestly, I never had a problem with them, they just work...if you can figure out what the problem was be sure to post back as I am certain someone else will duplicate your situation eventually.
Hope this helps you and congrats on your success with the PTA - that was a great idea and as the husband of a PTA president (several times over) I know your doing a bunch of good! Thanks!

I ended up using only DropdownBox controls. They display nicely on android devices. Not as versatile as an edit combo but it works well on my android devices.

Frank are you saying you have trouble with them too? Like I said I have not a single issue. I have grids and UX's that use edit combo's without a hitch at all anywhere. I have tested on my PC (windows 8.1) my Galaxy Note II, an Ellipsis 7" tablet, my daughters ipad and my wifes iphone. We have dang near every device over here and all seem to work fine with the drop downs and I have one on most of my forms somewhere currently. I am using V12.3 Build 2128.
It is a Mysql database as well. I have static filters using session ID' because its a SAAS app and some forms have dynamic filters also based on other fields. Again no hiccups anywhere.
              Hope I don't get the edit-combo flu!

                Hi Charles,
I wasn't able to tweak them to work well for me. That could be in part because on my large fingers and small screen. The DropdownBox seems to be 'built in' to the android browsers. If I cannot use a DropdownBox I use a lookup with a Grid Component and that works fairly well. I also hope you don't get the flu.

Ok folks - here is the answer - the filter method for selection MUST be set to Progressive to work. If you set to first letter it flashes open and closes immediately.

Makes me wonder if you would have had a match or not at first letter would it still close...bet not and if not then thats why it is closing because there is no match!

Sorry I meant to point out the lookup has to be set on render as the callback returns nothing.. must be a bug. Pete

It looks like the latest pre-release now supports specifying a Different Stored Value from the Display Value for Edit-Combo controls.

That doesn't FIX the fundamental issue at hand: the edit combo doesn't "act" as a field specified as a dropdown. Browsers interpret these fields differently. Safari sees a dropdown and gives you the nice wheel to select a value on the ihone or, on my Galaxy I get a nice popup to select a value. The edit combo gives you a listing that drops down from the box. Depending upon the mobile device it's weak at best, if it works at all.

Problem: The dropdown control doesn't allow the population of another control on my dialog as the edit combo does.

Bottom line: if you want your app to act like a mobile app for selecting values you must use the dropdown type which is universally interpreted by the browser. The solution (for Alpha) is to enhance the dropdown to allow populating a different control on the dialog with a value from the dropdown selection.

Thanks for listening! For now we have a complicated programmatic solution for a few key fields in our app. Fingers crossed it does blow up. We will leave the rest for now, hoping for a fix in the future.

Maybe you can use the getValue and setValue functions in the onChange event of the dopdownBox or even do a callback to run a sql query to set the values.
