Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Display text field content on hover

In my app I have a date field [task1date] that would show the completion date of a task. In the detail view, I also display a memo field that the user would populate with various notes [task1note]. On my grid view, I would only like to show the task1date field, but if the user hovers over this field, how can I have the task1note field contents appear? I am looking for an effect similar to the bubble help?

    Hi George,

It is actually the bubble help or "Title" that you need to use.
In the task1date field, add {task1note} in the Bubble help property. If you are setting this via code, then just set the "Title" property of the control.

      Thanks Edhy.

Another question now is, if one of the task's completion date is null but the user has keyed information explaining further items needed in the memo field, I have to hover over the slight 1 millimeter left edge of the date field in order to see the comment. What can be done to give the hover trigger a larger target when the field contains no data?

Re: Display text field content on hover

If you are using a Grid then I was going to say move your bubble help from
        (1) "Display Settings" / "Bubble Help" (this applies to the <span> element inside the <td> cell of a table)
        to
        (2) "Column Properties" / "Bubble Help Text" (this applies to the entire <td> - cell element)

But, (2) does not allow place holders. It would be nice if Alpha allowed place holders in (2), so the entire cell would be hover-able !

May be setting the width would work?
Under "Display Settings" / "conditional style" enter a condition of "1 = 1" and an "advanced style" of "width: 7em;"

May be having your query return eight spaces when the date is null? Although, even that might not be enough unless you turn on "preserve white-space" with an "advanced style" of "white-space: pre"

Create a cakculated field that encompasses whatever fields you want and then put the calc field place holder in the bubble help/.

I am using MySQL. I'm not sure where to create a calculated field opposed to creating one in a dbf environment.

go to grid builder, select sql statement instead of table.
then when you build the query
add the table, then select columns and select all that apply to you (possibly * ) then click on the expression and the select the expression that will select the calculated field and add the fields.
usually it is named as expr1 like that change it to something you like.

George, to clarify, are you looking to accomplish something like I have on my grids (see video)?
If so, I can show you how to do this.

When I hover over a field, the popup window displays other relevant field(s).

Calc fields can be within the grid ...

Yes Stephen, I like that approach. If you could show me the way, that would be great. I like the shorter delay in the popup and the cursor placement seems to be much more forgiving vs bubblehelp.

George: are you using a Grid or UX?

                        Stephen: that is really cool.

Alpha Software: Please consider providing the simple solution of allowing placeholders in the "Column Properties" / "Bubble Help Text" so the bubble help (with placeholders) can be applied to the entire cell, instead to the control inside the cell like the "Display Settings" / "Bubble Help" does. Or, an option that specifies if the bubble help should be applied to cell or its contents like the option for styles.
