Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    default values in detail part of grid object

    I have tried two different methods to use the last inserted values for the next record defaults (i.e. record #1 selects 'Wil Nelson' as artist, after save and inert another record, record #2 should default to 'Wil Nelson'. It doesn't. The drop-down list of artists defaults to the top of the list.

    I have tried:

    dim e.newvalues.artist_id
    dim e._state.lastartist_id as n
    e._state.lastartist_id = val(e.DataSubmitted.artist_id)
    in AfterInsertRecord and

    dim e.newvalues.artist_id as n
    if e._state.lastartist_id > 0 then
    	e.newvalues.artist_id = e._state.lastartist_id
    end if
    in OnInitialValueCalculate. I have also tried

    dim js as c
    dim ar as p
    ar.defaultValue_artist_id = e.dataSubmitted.artist_id
    dim json as c
    json = vartojson(ar,.f.,.t.)
    js = "{grid.object}.setStateInfo(" + json + ");"
    e.rtc.A_AjaxResponses[].text = js
    e.rtc.A_AjaxResponses[..].id = 1
    in AfterInsertRecord and

    dim defaultValue as c = ""
    'Any data that was stored in the stateInfo object is submitted in the __si2 object.
    if eval_valid("Request.Variables.__si2.defaultValue_artist_id") then
        defaultValue = Request.Variables.__si2.defaultValue_artist_id
    end if
    if defaultValue <> ""
        e.newvalues.artist_id = defaultValue
    end if
    in OnInitialValueCalculate. In both cases, the drop down for artist_id still shows the complete list of artists (dynamically built from a SQL select statement).

    Any ideas on what to look for? Thank you.

    Re: default values in detail part of grid object

    Here's an update. The second method works when you save and exit and then click new record again. It does not work with save and insert another record. Curiouser and curiouser.

      Re: default values in detail part of grid object

      since I do not have version 12
      is new to me. but..
      all new record primary key is -1 and when saved they are updated to correct primary key number, if we were to use that to our advantage then when the record is saved you can save the artist_id to a session variable and when the detail part is shown again check to see if the primary key value is -1 and if so the artist_id = session.artist_id
      this might work.
      this is only a concept, I did not try to see if that works as expected.
      thanks for reading

        Re: default values in detail part of grid object

        Artist_id is not the primary key. The code I posted does work when I submit return to the grid and press new record again. It does not work when you press the save and add another record icon in the tool bar.
