Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Some of my tables don't really delete the rows. They just put a DateDel on the record. I can't tell you how many time a user will tell me they didn't delete a record and I can go back and see who did it and restore it quickly. In fact, it's a table that a user admin can get to. Alpha gives you a lot of control over all of these things. The hardest part is finding the examples. I'd be happy to give you some examples if you want to write it yourself.
      Thanks much, please post your samples here so that we can all learn from it.

        Re: Basic AA Feature request

        It would be well served and much appreciated by those who are new to Alpha if someone who mentions that it's easy to do, would actually post a how to step by step from start to finish of a working sample SQL database with the 4 fields , created_by , created_on, modified_by and modified_on with how all can get populated. Since AA doesn't provide any Videos or Documentation on this SQL subject it would be a great resource for all. Thanks,

          I agree... Alpha has changed so much in the past couple of years that I'm often at a total loss on where to start new projects. I used to start with grids and a Tabbed UI but I get the feeling that maybe that should change. As well, out of date documentation (Alpha's own and 3rd party) are little help without combing through dozens of videos. While some of the improvements are quite amazing I still find myself cursing as I run into bugs and inconsistencies in e.g the report writer(s).

            Just let me know what you what to see. The code is different for a grid vs a ux component.

              Thanks Ivasic,
              I tried this in a grid under server side events (BeforeValidateNewRecord) and it didn't do anything. I used it in a UX and it works under the Server-side (afterDialogValidate)

              e.dataSubmitted.Modified_By = a5ws_getcurrentuser()
              e.dataSubmitted.Modified = date()

              e.dirtyColumns = e.dirtyColumns + crlf() + "Modified" + crlf() + "Modified_By"

                Re: Basic AA Feature request

                The features originally requested are commonly needed.

                I picked up a Lydia subscription to learn new tools and software...there is some first rate content there, including MySQL tutorials. However, heads down time is the only way to master a particular system, and find the best algorithm to solve common uses cases like these.

                That being said, a rework of the videos into a comprehensive, progressive, training course would be time well spent. Much of the requested change is, as others have mentioned, the province of the database. Perhaps a tutor on how to do perform the work on say, each of three common RDBMS's would help folks new to development?

                As an aside. Up to 50 columns in a table...really? Now, views I get, but tables? Dang! Is this DNA sequencing data or something?

                  I could not find what this was in reference to:

                  .

                  BTW, a couple of us have been reviewing this thread and talking about what video/help reference we can create to satisfy the need. Creating perfect video help is difficult as you always have to be selective and video creation is harder than it looks if trying to be comprehensive. But keep listing what you need.....

                    Hey Steve: I got the 50 columns thing from the post time-stamped 09-12-2014, 08:33 PM, by Jetson Lilibeth.

                    Yup, I use videos to train my users. You are correct, it requires a lot of forethought.
