Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

HELP: Debugging UX Without Full Login ...

    Hi,

I'm new to AA and I'm converting a VFP application into an AA browser-based application that when in full implementation will utilize a "processing" A5w page that establishes a variety of Session variables after a user logs in that among other places is utilized during the save process.

However, when I try to test the UX outside of running the full app (which I no longer have access to the AA Debugger), one of the Session variables (session.usr_guid) has not been established since the "processing" page was not run.

Is there a way to check for the existence of a particular session variable and then if it doesn't exist for debugging purposes, create and provide it with a default value?

    (In pseudo code)

    DOES Session.usr_GUID EXIST?
    IF NOT
    Session.usr_GUID = "7AE1B014-9323-4BBD-AD10-DCE0381E39F9"
    END IF

    Thanks

    Kevin

you can declare and assign a value then test it if good, comment out or remove the declaration and assignment.

      Hi Gandhi,

Thanks for the response, but what I would really like to do is to determine if the particular session variable (in this case session.usr_guid) is actually a valid variable, and then if not, I can declare and set it.

This would eliminate the need to come back and comment it out or delete it in the code ...

      Any ideas?

Have you tried the variable_exists function ?
        e.g.
        if variable_exists("Session.usr_GUID")=.f. then
        'some action
        end if

Your developer server is valid for 30 minutes or so so you can publish to your machine server and test it in your computer or if in local network from other computers too. Every 30 minutes or probably slightly less you restart alpha five.
Please note alpha should be running to test, the server will not work independently.
          thanks for reading

            Mumfi,

Worked perfectly, thanks a lot ...

Coming from another development language, so much to learn, so little time ...

              Hi Gandhi,

I'm probably missing something, but your latest post didn't seem to address the question I posed ... was this in response to my question about checking for the existence of a session variable?

              Thanks,

Re: HELP: Debugging UX Without Full Login ...

There are 2 approaches to handling session variables that could be missing. One has already been suggested
                  Code:
                  if variable_exists("session.Somevar") = .F.
                  	session.someVar = "somevalue"
                  end if
The other is to dim the variable in the component server side execute events
                  Code:
                  dim session.someVar as c
If the session variable already exists, this does nothing as the "dim" method first checks if the variable exists. You can use a variation of that line to set a default value if the variable does not exist.
                  Code:
                  dim session.someVar as c = default "someValue"
Again, if the variable exists, nothing happens. If it does not exist, it is created with the default value specified

Wow, excellent Jerry, I like that approach.

I can see where the variable_exists will be helpful in other areas, but I think this will be the standard all of my component ServerSide XBasic events
