Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    DropdownBox Dynamic - display value versus stored value

    Scenario: Mobile Application using UX Drop down box called Customers, that shows the CustomerName field from SQL table where CustomerID is primary key.

    CustomerID CustomerName
    1 Rob G
    2 Andy P
    3 Tommy T

    The user selects from this dropdown and the CustomerID is then used as an argument in a List component.

    I also want to reference the selection chosen by the user, but the following Javascript returns the CustomerID

    eg. varCustomerSelected = {dialog.Object}.getValue('Customers')
    returns 1 and not Rob G

    Apologies if this is bl**dy obvious, I have attempted to search the forums and videos, but what do I have to do to reference the displayed value not the stored value???

    Cheers in advance
    Rob

    Re: DropdownBox Dynamic - display value versus stored value

    I don't think you can easily reference the displayed value, it is for display only. I think you have the following options:

    1) Concatenate the two fields so that you have 1 field with the value: "1 Rob G". You might even make it "1: Rob G" so you can use the ":" to help separate the two. Then pull the value apart to get the separate components. (You can even display Rob G and return 1 Rob G)

    2) Leave it as is, but after you get the ID value (1) Use Xbasic to do another call back to get the name.

    3) Use Firebug to analyze the component. The display value is hidden in the javascript somewhere, it's just a matter of finding the correct JavaScript reference to access it. (But I think option 1 is your easiest and least chatty solution.)

      Re: DropdownBox Dynamic - display value versus stored value

      Another thing to consider is using Textbox fields instead of Dropdown and adding a Lookup definition to the Textbox. This is what I opted for in my app because I wanted all "dropdowns" to behave exactly the same. When you use a Textbox with Lookup definition you can have the Lookup populate multiple fields and I just include extra hidden fields or display fields on my forms that get populated with the fields I want from the lookup table. Video #8 shows these types of lookups.

          Wondering if you ever got an answer to this? I would like to reference the displayed value of a radio button which I assume would be a similar if not identical process.

            This current video gets you close as it explains how to get the display value of a dropdown control.

            http://www.ajaxvideotutorials.com/V1...ropdownBox.swf

            Radio buttons are similar, but not quite the same. With a little tweeking to the original code, this code gets you what you want from a Radio Button...

            Code:
            var x = {dialog.Object}.getValue('radioBtn');
            if(x == '') return;
            var ele = {dialog.Object}.getPointer('radioBtn');
            var e2 = ele.children;

            var arr = [];
            for(var i = 0; i < e2.length; i++){
            	if(e2[i].children.length>0){
            		delete obj;
            		var obj = {};
            		obj.text = e2[i].textContent;
            		obj.value = e2[i].children[0].value;
            		arr.push(obj);
            	}
            }

            var indx = {dialog.object}._findArrayProp(arr,'value',x);
            var display = arr[indx].text;
            alert('value: ' + x + ' -- display: ' + display);
