Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Show/Hide Expression based on Blank Field?

I know the JavaScript functions are different than Xbasic, and I can't find one that matches what I am looking for in the "Insert Functions" list.

I am trying to hide a field if it has any data in it, and show it only if it is blank.

Is there a way to write a JavaScript expression for that?

Something like isblank(LOCATION01), which of course does not work as written.

    LOCATION01 = ""
may work, possible circular reference. I am not sure.

Re: Show/Hide Expression based on Blank Field?

You probably want to code it in javascript and plop it in an appropriate client-side event - on[Grid|Row|UX|Dialog]Render-Whatever. Or use one of the server-side events.

You want to avoid circular references, since they can cause undesirable behavior:

      1. Field is blank
      2. I enter data
      3. Client-side show/hide evaluates
      4. Field disappears

^This is why you don't want circular references. Not only can the client no longer validate what they entered before saving, if there are client-side errors, they probably won't be able to edit the field to fix them because it's hidden. Same thing goes for disabling fields.

easier way is to have another field which will be filled when field in question is filled and then based on that field show/hide this field. seems round about way to do but avoids circular reference.
for example if there is a field called is_location01_filled and set it to true when field location01 is filled. then it is easy to show hide this field. since the update process will work after the data submission the circular reference is avoided.

Simply enter LOCATION01 < '' in the Show/Hide expression, at least for the Grid DetailView.

Albert.... did you get a working result for this question??

These last 2 suggestions didn't work for me.

And... are there some docs on "show/hide expression" and "enable expression"??? Both of these say if the expression evaluates to true then a control either shows or is enabled.

Re: Show/Hide Expression based on Blank Field?

I was able to produce the solution using GGandhi suggestion. On the Query (AlphaDAO), select the field twice, for ex., on an table with Address1 and Address2, select Address2 twice and it will provide a default alias name but you can rename it. I renamed Address3 as an example. Add this field to the DetailView list and hide row. In the Address2 Show/hide expression, I entered Address3 = "". Now if Address2 is empty, it will be shown, else it will be hidden.

Re: Show/Hide Expression based on Blank Field?

Thanks...this works with a slight twist.
Mine is dbf so I created a calculated field and equated it to the real one.
Next, I want the field to show only if it has a value and blank if it does not, so I used the statement calculated_value <> ""

My field to show/hide is an image and since it takes up quite a bit of space, it helps to eliminate that big blank space if there is no image.
