Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report Layout for Monthly Schedule

    I have a monthly work schedule grid which shows 31 days at a time (Thank you Chris Sutton), and now I want to create a printed version.

    What I'm having a problem with is in getting the days to show across the report rather than horizontal, which is the default.

    Hi, first, you're welcome! :) Second, do you have a sample report you can attach to play around with? I haven't been on in a few days so if you solved this then great!

      Can you define columns for your report?
      There can be only one.

        I would think this is best done in a pivot table, probably via a stored procedure or a view, than the normal table you have.

          Re: Report Layout for Monthly Schedule

          Hi Chris and Stan. I basically want the printed report to mimic the web page (as much as possible). To that end, I don't really have a sample report to look at as I am just getting started with it, but if you can imagine the days of the month being the column headers and the fields showing what shift is working below each day, that is what I am looking to do. (I'm sure someone has done this before, I just couldn't find anything on the message board about it.)

          I've attached the a copy of the actual data table the report is attached to, if anyone cares to play around with it. I thought this would be a simple report, but I'm stuck on getting the dates to show horizontally for each date break, rather than vertically.

          Stan the columns are simply the date as the "header" (of sorts), and a separate field for each "Squad". The object is just to show which shift (Day, Evening or Midnight) each squad is working on each day of the month. Basically it is a web-based spreadsheet, and I want to give the user the option to print a copy.

            Rich, I spent some time trying to play around ... I honestly do not know a lot about the capabilities of the reporting system in A5 except for a simple, standard type of report. I will try to play around some more tomorrow, but maybe someone else has some ideas..

              I understand, and thanks.

              Funny thing is that I am normally pretty darn good at designing reports, but this time I'm stumped due to the need to have the break in dates show across the report instead of down.

              Hopefully someone much smarter than I will give it a shot.

                Re: Report Layout for Monthly Schedule

                This is the sort of thing that drove me to hand-coded HTML reporting. You're not bound by any organization of the report editors.

                In your example, while you could probably build a View to do the data organization, let's look at it another way: The first row of your HTML table is the column headings. The second row is the data for Squad 1, etc. So, you create a template for each HTML table row. Then query, fill the template, repeat, until done. There are efficiencies to be had with refinements to this approach but I don't want to try to describe anything that might complicate my suggestion.

                Attached is one that Andy Meer just built -- in this case the columns of food are variable. But by handling our organization logic in a function, we got what we wanted.

                  Steve I am totally confused by your post, most likely because I have very little knowledge of html coding that is not in the WYSIWYG editor.

                  I'm trying to create a printed report, so I'm not sure I understand how that fits in with html code. (Or does it?)

                  Thanks,

                    I remember seeing Andy's menu routine somewhere, or maybe it was just a video giving a demo.. but I thought there was instructions on how he created that report.. i just can't find it though.

                      Re: Report Layout for Monthly Schedule

                      Yes Rich, a report. And Chris is right - Andy had a large segment on how to do this in a previous set of tutorial videos we did together. There are a couple variations. Let me outline:

                      Create a UDF, let's call it MyHTML. In this example just a simple, single table with single data cell, but you can really expand this, add in queries, result sets and data from result sets, etc:

                      Code:
                      Function MYHTML as C ()
                        dim txt as c = ""
                         txt = txt + "<table><tr><td> Here is data </td></tr></table>"
                         MyHTML = txt
                      end function
                      Now there are several ways to get that HTML into your report. You may have to experiment just a bit. We use the older free-form report designer for these. One way that usually works is to put an HTML object on your report (from the Toolbox).

                      Then, make a calculated field:

                      Code:
                      MyData = MYHTML()
                      And then, edit the contents of your HTML object to emit the calc field. The snippet would be:

                      Code:
                      . . .
                      <body>
                      {calc->MyData}
                      </body>
                      </html>
                      A hint here is that you need to set a property for your HTML object. Get out the Task List / Properties settings and make sure your HTML object is checked for "Growable"

                      To give you a little more idea of what your Xbasic code looks like to construct the HTML table, here are a few lines from one of my functions creating a fairly simple HTML table:

                      Code:
                      . . .
                      txt = txt + "<table border='1' cellpadding='3px'>" + crlf()
                      txt = txt + "<tr><td colspan=2 align='center'><font face='Arial'>Daily Summary - " + vFacilityName + " - " + vDate + "</font></td></tr>" + crlf()
                      	txt = txt + "<tr><td class='TDData' valign='top'>Animals below 90% of target base</td> <td class='TDData'>" + vAnimals_target_txt + "</td></tr>" + crlf()
                      	if vAvgNotice > 0
                      		txt = txt + "<tr><td class='TDData' valign='top'>Animals below Average Rating (" + vAvgNotice + ")</td> <td class='TDData'>" + BelowAvgTxt + "</td></tr>" + crlf()
                      	end if
                      	txt = txt + "<tr><td class='TDData'>Number of sessions</td> <td class='TDData'>" + vSession_Ct + "</td></tr>" + crlf()
                      	txt = txt + "<tr><td class='TDData'>Total session minutes</td> <td class='TDData'>" + vTotal_Duration + "</td></tr>" + crlf()
                      . . .
                      Hope this helps.
                      -Steve

                        Thanks Steve. I never knew you could put html code into a report, but I learn something new every day.

                        It looks tricky, but I will certainly give it a try and see what happens.

                          A-ha, Success!

                          I got it, and I didn't have to use html. (Although I will still experiment with it in the near future.)

                          They way I did it was to create 31 mini sub-reports, each filtered to a different day of the month. It really wasn't hard, because after I created the first sub-report, I just copied it and changed the filter to a different day.

                          It may not be the best way to accomplish this, but it works!
