Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Calculation Help

I am designing a stock control system for a client but can't seem to get my head around part of the problem. Designing a straight forward stock system is easy, however my client also uses raw materials (sheet metal, etc).

For example my client has a pieces of sheet metal 10m long by 1m wide (he is only concerned about length remaining when it comes to stock control), he uses 2m length on one job and 1m on another which leaves him 7m. Now he has another job which requires 8m, the system has to figure out that the first sheet is too small and uses a new sheet which will leave 2m. Finally he has another job which requires 3m, the system must first check the used sheets to see if there is enough length available before using a new sheet.

So I'm not sure what would be the best way to tackle this, anyone any ideas?

    I hope this makes sense??

    Re: Calculation Help

Assuming he only is concerned with even cuts of at least one meter it would seem to me that he needs sku's for each of the possibilities. 10, 9, 8, 7 etc.

Inventory moves into the 10 meter sku as it is received. When a piece is first cut the whole 10 meter sheet is removed from 10 meter inventory, the cutoff portion is used/allocated to the job, and the remainder is moved to the appropriate shorter length sku. When the next job is started the system checks the shortest length sku equal to the job length for available quantity and moves up till inventory is found.

Hi Stan unfortunately it can be variable lengths down to the cm :(

        Hi David,
I am guessing that your storage system for these partial sheets it already putting them into groups. So Stan's guidelines should still work even if you use cm instead of meters. If a sheet is more than 6m but <= 7m, and you call this GRP7 then you should be be able to pull up the stock list for that group and select which sheet to use. I suppose a labeling system would also be needed for the department that has to pull the stock which gets moved as it is used.

          Re: Calculation Help

So one sku with a field for length. Searching for the smallest available piece is done with a lookupn() or lookupc() depending on the value you want to find such as an id_number or id_code and the necessary index.

Looking up the closest match with either could result in a misleading match per testing. Needing a match to 6.8 meters would match 6.6 and not 7.2 when the 7.2 meter piece is what is wanted. A custom function that ordered the records descending and found the smallest big enough would probably be better.

Custom function that operates on sample table. Both attached.

piece_find(6.8) finds id "00002" for example.

              Hi Stan,
I downloaded your table and added to an A5v11 adb but did not see any forms - did you make one? Or can't I view it in v11?

No form. Import the function first.

Then just go to the interactive and

                ? piece_find(6.8)

My thought was that the application would have a button that called the function based on user input of a variable representing the length needed for a job.

                The function is quite simple.

Open the inventory/stock table, order descending by length.
Loop through the records storing the length in the function return value until the record doesn't meet the necessary length. Return the id of the last (least length) record processed.
