Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Windows update and Chrome = broken app?

Re: Windows update and Chrome = broken app?

    Steve,
If Alpha could not reproduce the problem and they accessed your site via chrome then perhaps a Chrome setting or Extension is different on your computers than on Alpha's? I'm sure you thought of that, though. However, here are some items I can think of to check under Chrome settings (accessed via the 3-horizontal bars on top right of browser and selecting "Settings"):
    - Extensions: Disable all extensions
    - Settings \ Sign in: If chrome is "signing in" to the chrome repository then see if there is a way to not do that. Perhaps it is loading some global javascript that interferes with Alpha.

    - Settings \ On startup: If "continue where you left off" is on then try another option.
    - Settings \ Appearance: restore the default theme

    Click "Show Advanced Settings"
    - Settings \ Privacy \ Content Settings:
Is everything set to the "recommended" level
Are all the dialog options blank under all the "Manage exceptions..." buttons?

If I remember right, it seems to me that buttons in an Alpha Web app don't always get the javascript attached to them the same way. It seems like when I have been debugging that sometimes I will see an "On??Event" in the source code view in the browser's debug tool, but other times I don't and the controls work anyway.

Rich - Alpha tech did see the problem when they logged into my site. So do many other users. But until and unless I can get a working repeatable sample of the problem to Alpha to fix, they can't address it. And so far, I haven't had time to do that -- just not enough time in the days and days in the week.

Update - we tentatively think this is a conflict with updated Zendesk javascript -- I have an integration for Zendesk with this site. Any chance anyone else has a Zendesk integration and this problem?

Fortunately (maybe) Zendesk just released a new widget to replace/update their interface and it looks promising, but I need to spend more time on it before I'm sure.

          Steve,

As you know I am having the same issue with one of our applications that is hosted with Zebrahost and using their load balancer. We do not use Zendesk. I had one of clients use firefox for a day and we had the same problem.

Re: Windows update and Chrome = broken app?

I'm almost sure it's a Zendesk conflict. They have a new widget that appears to work just fine, and I'm waiting on a couple questions to their Tier 2 tech support so I can implement system-wide. But I've removed the Zendesk feature from a couple of the key pages where I had the most known problems, and that seems to have done the job.

And yes, the behavior I'm describing here is present in IE and Firefox so this thread is a bit mis-titled.

Re: Windows update and Chrome = broken app?

              Hi Everyone,
We have previously identified an issue with older versions of Array Networks firmware causing the reported button issue. So far this problem has only been identified with a specific firmware (load balancer) being used in conjunction with Internet Explorer. The best way to test if the load balancer may be involved in the trouble is to access the individual instances by IP, bypassing the load balancer, as Scott has suggested.

The problem does not seem to affect all customers running older versions of Firmware as we have received limited reports from our customers who utilize a load balancer in conjunction with Alpha. If you believe you may be experiencing this issue please contact us [email protected] and we can very simply verify your firmware version.

We are working in conjunction with our vendor to have the load balancer firmware’s updated but as these are shared load balancer we must take in consideration other customers who may also be using the load balancers who could be negatively affected by an upgrade to the new firmware...

We are also looking at implementing a Netscaler load balancer as an alternative for customers who are experiencing this issue or are looking for a more customizable technology.

If you ever experience any problem please feel free to email us at [email protected] or call us at 844-go-zebra #2 you can reach me 24/7/365 and I would be happy to investigate any issue to make sure it is not hosting related...

Re: Windows update and Chrome = broken app?

24 hours ago we replaced the old Zendesk javascript and CSS with their just-released widget. This completely solved our "buttons won't click" problem. It sounds like no one else here has a Zendesk implementation so I know that's of little consolation to anyone who continues to have the issue. I'll endorse Jason's advice -- I logged into my servers directly, not through the load balancer, and found the problem still persisting, which as he suggests, tells you if the load balancer might be of issue or not. In our case, not.
