Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to build AlphaDAO connection string on client's WAS

How do you instruct the system administrator at your client's site in building the AlphaDAO connection string necessary for their WAS server to connect to their database server? And how do you get this string into your app?

I would hope they give you the credentials to login to their database server, then you can build and supply them without any mistakes.

I agree with Gandhi. The sales price should include maybe 4 hours' remote installation and setup fees.

And Rich - not to derail anything here, but if you're selling the same thing several times over (which I think I interpret from your messages of late) then why not set up a single SAAS site instead? Much more manageable though I also understand you've chosen your path for reasons.

I have not investigated this for quite a while so not sure if there is anything newer than my information, otherwise...

Unless you have done the work to set "dynamic connection strings" (discussed elsewhere on this forum), the setting goes in the a5_application.ai file in the webroot, which is a file they cannot (or rather should not) edit. Normally you would use Alpha Developer, edit the connection string in the Profile and publish. But in a pinch, and assuming they don't have a copy of Alpha Developer, you instruct them to edit that file by entering the non-encrypted connection string. The only practical reason you "should not edit" that file is it will immediately be overwritten when you next publish any file from your Developer.

Gandhi, yes having a remote connection into their site would be helpful, but I'd still like to have some sort of builder to help build the connection string. The customer won't have the IDE. So far I have NOT even been able to build a good connecting string in the IDE under the Web Project Profile and publish it.

Steve Workings, yes I have designed the application to work in a multi-tenant mode and I am planning for SAAS. But some customers don't want a hosted SAAS. It is possible we might have to offer our older, non-Alpha, WAN, desktop, client-server program to those customers :-(

Steve Wood, the "a5_application" file is good to know about (on my system the extension is ".a5i", not ".ai"). I see application subfolders of the main webroot each get their own copy of that file. So the AlphaDAO connecting string can be set there.

          All,
is there a little app or builder to help the site administrator to setup the connecting string in either the a5_application file or what ever file you want it stored in?

            Steve Workings,
Really, 4 hours for setup? What sort of things might I run into?

I'm just suggesting a number. If things go well, 1 hour or less, certainly. I have no idea what you're doing or anything else. Don't take this too literally, but don't cut yourself short either. Some IT departments I've worked with are great. Others have cost me days with all their red tape, power-brokers, odd configurations, you name it.

                Rich,

There is some valuable setup information in this document: http://help.iadn.com/bestpractices/

Four hours is a good number. It may take you far less, but it may take a lot more. Depends again on the customer and other details. It is more than just setting up the Alpha web server, there is the database, AlwaysUp if you use that, install or verify backup, added time if the client uses VPN, or LogMeIn for access, etc. Padding some time helps when the customer invariably calls and says "won't print". I have $250 on my price list for setting up a server from scratch. That is about 2 hours and doesn't include any follow up services.
